Is this really an Upgrade?

Well thing is i havent OC'ed the newcastle (all stock) and am considering overclocking the venice to 2500 (if that even happens).

Better question would be, going from 2200 (on the NC) to 2500 on the venice, will i notice a considerable difference?

Or am i just better off getting an opteron 144/146/148 for a little more??

Thanks!

I don't think 2200->2500 will be much of a noticeable difference, certainly not worth spending $130+ on a new CPU for 300MHz extra. You could do the Opteron (single core) route for a bit of extra possible overclocking headroom, but IMO what you already have is pretty sufficient until such time in the future you might want to move to a dual-core CPU.

Edit: I have no idea how well Newcastle cores overclock, but couldn't you at least give that a shot before doing anything else?

I had a 3200+ NC oc'd to 2.4ghz. I upgraded to 939/PCI-E, and got an Opteron 144 that I ran at 2.43ghz. I honestly noticed ZERO difference in everyday use. Synthetic benchmarks were slightly higher due to the bigger L2 cache, but it was kid of dissapointing.

Then, I sold the 144 and bought an X2 3800+ that I run at 2.4ghz. It has been awesome.

So, I'd stick with what you have, or upgrade to an X2 or Opteron 165/170 dual-core. Newcastle to single core opteron is NOT worth your trouble.

Hey guys, many thanks for the replies.

Then dual core it is....though i may delay the upgrade a few more months or weeks the earliest🙂

again guys, many thanks!

Well, I got an Opty 144 for my 3500+NC and $50... SO far Im at 2.7ghz at 1.52v. Im pleased with this, and my 3500+ went to 2475.
