Is this processor dead?

One of my friends had me look at her computer since it would shut itself off while trying to boot into windows. I thought it might have been a power supply problem, but the power supply is fine.

Therefore, I started removing PCI cards, RAM, etc one at a time to see what was causing the problem. It continued to beep until I removed the processor. The processor is now out, and the beep is gone.

Therefore, I'm thinking that the processor probably died. The question I have though is: If the processor is removed, shouldnt I still get an error beep?

The CPU is a Duron600, and the motherboard is a generic ATX.

The beeps come from the bios. No cpu, no beeps. What is the beep sequence that you get? You can usually find something online that id's the beep code.

The beep is just one long one, that will go on for minutes until I unplug the power supply. Considering that I had removed everything (except the processor) and it still beeped, I thought I would be the processor since when removed, the beeping stopped

it's like the heart monitor machine in the hospital.... flat heart rate, flat long continual beep..... RIP generic ATX board!

It may be that the system board is bad, not the processor. As I mentioned, in most cases, the beep/beeps are triggered by the BIOS code. If you take the processor out, the BIOS code cannot run, therefore, no beep.
