Is this power cord thingy standard?

It's either a figure 8 looking plug or figure 8 with one side flat type plug. either of those are pretty standard. Rat shack should have what you seek.

the plug/jack/cord part won't be the problem, you have to make sure the DC side is the right size/style and puts out the correct Volts/Amps for the drive thingy

I know we could get you the cable cheaper, but I just checked Western Digital and they sell the cords for $9.99.

Radio Shack probably does have them. I think Radio Shack calls them "figure-8" sockets. Try something like this. There are many versions of that cable, and you'll have to ask the Radio Shack personnel about the differences.
