To dispose of all data on the disk doing a zero fill or secure erase or full format(called differnt things by differnt manufactorers) is the way to go.

Well actually in the post he is responding to: "Due to its backdoor functionality, your computer is very likely to have been compromised and there is no way that it can be trusted again. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be to do a reformat and reinstallation of the operating system." I guess I'm not sure what the reformat step is about. Can you quick format a partition containing your Win7 system and still have it work? Isn't it redundant if you intend to reinstall the OS? Just reinstall WIN7 from the dvd and any residual code is gone. Right?

A quick format just erases the file tables, or something like that, the actual files are still there. That's the method I use to quickly erase large thumb drives. It goes much quicker than deleting. But the files are still there.

Issues like this is just another reason to keep a good image backup of that hard drive (like the one generated with software like Acronis TrueImage), updated when ever a major installation is dome on the HD.

In case of major infestation, One re-ghosts the drive. The level of ghosting is so that it destroy everything that is currently on the infected drive.

It takes anywhere from 10 to 60 minutes (depending on the size of data on the Drive), when done you have instant active drive with the OS, applications and Data, as it was at the time of the backup.
