is it possible for only the 3d portion of the gpu to crap out but leaving the 2d functions intact?

nope, but it is possible that a graphic card works in low intensive 2d apps and craps out when a
more intensive 3d app starts.

It is possible for the 2d to get damaged and mis-function severly though.

Ive experienced it.
