I don't like having Sys. Restore turned because I don't want it monitoring automatically. What I want to be able to do is create restore points manually, and then restore them when necessary.

Right now, I've just finshed optimizing my system (tweaks and such), so I want to create a restore point in case something goes wrong, but I don't want windows to actively monitor and create system points by itself. Is that possible?

IMO, It would be far better to simply image your system using either Ghost or Acronis True Image and keep the image for backup.

No, it is not possible in the current SR design. Just leave it on, the overhead is actually not thay high.

Just limit the amount of drive space that system restore uses. Please, please do NOT turn it off. Although it's designed to be easy enough for anyone to use it's incredibly powerful and very useful for recovery by a pro.

The "disk cleanup wizard" can be used to delete all but the most current restore point if you would like. That kindof accomplishes what you want.

do a search for

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore

you might be able to set global interval really far apart

I'm not sure if it will affect monitoring though

In fact is possible, but it is a bit tricky.

With system restore enable, manually make 2 snapshots of your current system configuration using system restore.
Open windows explorer and check if you have those settings in Tools - Folder options - View Menu:
- Show hidden files and folders
- hide protected operating systems files (deselect this one)
- Use simple file sharing (deselect this one)

Select System Volume Information, right click and select sharing and security.
In the security tab, click ADD and add your user account.
Click advanced and select to replace entries on subfolders. click ok
Enter system volume information folder
Enter _restore.... folder
Check the RPxx folders. Select not the last, but the previous one and zip it. save the zip in any place you want.
Turn off system restore in My Computer properties.
If you need to restore it, just enable it again, restore the folder in its original location and restore using system restore.
for security reasins leave the system volume information folder with default settings without your user permissions assigned.
