Is this possible in the near future?

Ok you know those mini-DVD portable players. Ok, now imagine that but with a little tiny maybe 3 inches in diameter satilite (spell) coming out of the side. So its a portable sweet TV wired for like direct tv. Then like with one of those palm/handspring keyboard addons you can plug in that foldable keyboard and you have a computer

Is this in the near future? I was just wondering. Thanks.

A dish? Yuck. There are GHZ range antennas that don't use big fugly reflectors like that.
And why shouldn't this happen? Desktop computers' days are numbered. The combination of cell phones and PDAs into a single device is an omen.

it's not inconceivable, but it'll likely require more satellites being launched. the technology is more or less already available with directTV, etc sort of internet service providers, or even with people who use their cell phones in conjunction with their laptops to get online while away from any landlines.

have you seen the size of those global satellite phones? last time i got to play with one, it was too bulky to be really portable and the quality of the connection was horrible.

Desktop computers' days are numbered? Not likely.

I expect to see more use of desktop computers as "power"/real work machines and more use of laptops, handhelds and wearables as "communication" machines. Desktop computers arent going anywhere.
