I have an extra Polk Audio 10" sub in a 1.0 cubic foot box that does not fit in my car. I was thinking of using this as a sub for my home theater, but how could I go about powering it?

Could I just use a car amp with some sort of adapter to run it from a plug in the wall? If so, how or where could I buy such a power adapter?

just wire your amp up to that and you will be all set...run the remote (blue wire) to the positive lead

FWIW, although you could use that AC-->DC convertor, 3A@13.8V really isn't that much to run a subwoofer amp with. That's only ~42 watts output and audio amplifiers are nowhere near 100% efficient.

You'd have more luck rigging a car amp to an AT or ATX power supply if you felt you needed to run your sub with a car amp. ;)

I'd wonder about the sound... If you've got an old home sub that you can put your new speaker in, I'm sure it would be fine. But most car boxes are made differently. So I'd be curious how it works out.

Hook it up to a home theater amp.

no...dont do that!!!

home theater amps are 6 ohm, and most can't drop down to the 4 ohms of a car speaker/subwoofer. As for the power of the car amp, that power supply will do fine for most amps. If he had said that he had a huge 1000 watt class d amp, then I would have recommended a better PS, but it doesnt sound like he needs much more than the one I linked to.

or just buy a 500 watt plate amp and be done with it.

And it is perfectly fine to hook it up to your receiver provided your receiver has ample power.
