ok here is my set up....i will be adding the second client shortly.

i have a xp box that is hooked up to a cable modem. this is using the xp networking program as the "server".

then the xp box is hooked to a win2k3 server box as a client and it gets net access. I have it this way for my own personal reasons.

now, i would like to add a second computer to the win2k3server box and have it get net access too. however i dont know if this is possiable. how would i set this up?

ill try to draw something incase you are confused...

xp(server)hooked to cable modem-----------------to------------------>win2k3server box as client--------to------------>xp box.how does it get net access like this?

I believe i understand what your doing and asking....

ok you want to :

xpserver with the cable modem

to

win2kserver as a client of the xp sever and a server to

to

xp clients or clients in general

correct? well, if you already have the servers setup... from the win 2k server drop in 2 nics, one from the xp server into the win 2k server and the other nic connected into a wired or wireless hub... then all your clients to the hub.

am i making sense and do you belive i understand what your trying to ask? I hope i helped and anythings possible.

I need to ask out of curiosity, why do you want to run an xp box as a server to a win 2k server then to clients? Im quite sure the win xp server can accomplish everything the win 2k server can.

I as well am curious about your personal reasons for this. You should have internet into a router then all three computers off of the router. Router does dhcp, server can serve and workstations can work.

Doing so you create few independent networks and if you would use NAT software (ICS) you might not be able to configure to second Routing.

It has more probability to succeed if you use two Routers that can be configured with private IP on the WAN side.

Few independent Networks means Internet OK, but One Way down stream sharing and Remote Control upstream.

thanks guys................first let me start by saying the reason i dont want the xp box to be a full server is because its in my room upstairs and my dad does not want any wires running too it. i have it connected to the win2k3 box because it is directly down the basement and all i did was run the wire straight down the wall. the win2k3 box has all the hardware needed, nics that is. i dont have any routers etc. because it was first a 2 pc network and no need for that hardware. my dad just got a pc and wants to join now. i dont wanna buy wireless, routers etc there is no need to spend extrea money. i got some cable to use so im all set.

so......the win2k3 box has 1 free nic in it right now.....how do i get this to work? i dont understand what "bridge" is but windows says it takes 2 connections and makes it 1. is this what i need to enable? or do i just set up the win2k3 as a server???i dont know if that way would work.

Yes you do need to use a router. You can find them for $30 or less. A router is also a firewall and I would never not consider using one. ICS works ok but it's not a very good permanant solution.

Please, for everyone's sanity, buy a soho router. The time and frustration it would take to get this working using your plan is well worth $20-30 and the quick and painless setup of a router.
