Is this picture accurate?

Hi,

I was looking for pictures of Earth at night. I found a couple of them, but the most aesthetically pleasing one doesn't seem to portray the Earth correctly.

Earth At Night

Could you please look at this pic (about 300k) and tell me if that is what Earth looks like? I know the eastern part of Asia and Australia are cut off, but are the lights and all accurate? Seems a little bright.

oh yah someone posted this up before once too.. they use a special filter to enhance all the artificial light taken over a period of time... it basically used to show population density all over the world...

Yeah, that is real. I know it seems bright from that distance, but these are hundreds of pictures that have been merged together. They were taken by orbiting DMSP satellites.

Look how many lights in America compared with Africa, shows the poverty.. or show's the time of day

LOL at kami, but sadly I think you gave someone an idea and it won't be long before someone posts a "ALL YOUR EARTH LIGHTS ARE BELONG TO US" thead.

The photo's were all taken during a period of darkness for each particular part of the world and then merged together. I think the biggest thing this picture shows is how much energy countries like the USA and Japan use in comparison to the rest of the world.
