is this PC worth upgrading at all?

hi guys. it's been a while since i posted in GH but this is what attracted me to AT so here's to getting back to roots.

my question is pretty simple... i built the rig in my sig in Nov. 2004 and even then it was probably a bit out of date...

I am just wondering if I have any upgrade options that make sense or if I should start out fresh with a new mobo / cpu combo.

I'm interested in playing some recent PC games such as Crysis and Bioshock. My system runs Bioshock but not in the display modes I would like to play it in.

n/m here are the specs:

CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2700 2157MHz
Motherboard: Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe
Memory: 1024 MB of Ultra PC3200 DDR
Video Card: ATI X1300 Pro 256MB DDR2 Radeon
Hard Drive: Western Digital 120.0 GB @ 7200 RPMS
Monitor: Acer AL2216W 22" widescreen
DVD R/W: BENQ DW1640
Sound Card: Soundblaster Audigy Gamer
Operating System: Windows XP Pro

oh and question 2: should i buy & add more RAM for starters?

Can you run Bioshock on a x1300? Wow, mine could barely handle Doom 3 and Far Cry.

Get a new video card if you want some life into that machine. Don't bother with RAM.

Now, if you're a serious gamer (and by mentioning Bioshock and Crysis, I think you are) then don't bother and save the cash for a complete upgrade. Yes, you could pop a new video card and it will be better, but it will still be pretty miserable, particularly with a 22" LCD. Crysis *needs* two cores to be good.

money spent on that system at this point would be a complete waste of money. ram isn't the problem, its speed. and parts for the obsolete cost more now anyways. any 99 dollar frys combo with etiher amd/intel dual core cpu would wipe the floor with that computer. you will of course need new video as well. its not just the fps in games, dual core general use smoothness can't be beat.

thanks guys. it is high time i get back into the tech side of computers and read up here and other sites as well on what has happened since 2004. not that i knew much then, but i built this rig and i'm anxious to sink a bunch of money i don't have into something new. looking forward to reading up on all of the threads for some good tips.

yep, the xp was good during its day.i had a mobile barton xp at 2.2ghz as well🙂 but it wasnt worth upgrading beyond that after a while. its just too late now with ddr2 and pcie and dual cores

i can't even consider myself a gamer or enthusiast with this setup, really. i might as well just fire up some old games and STFU until i get some $.

these are some of the things that marriage & mortgages can do to you boys!! take note! 😛

well you can justify a cheap upgrade just for the sweet smoothness of multitasking with multiple cores and 2gb+ ram😉
course it doens't matter as much if you rarely multitask, but if you do, its sweet!
