Is it ok to stick a 32-bit riser card in a 64-bit PCI slot? It fits, just wondering if it's ok.

I do not know the answer for certain. But I do believe so.

I would recommend you get the answer from someone more experienced. I read about this when 64bit PCI slots came out and I seem to recall it saying backwards compatable. But my memory is fogged from time.

Depends on the motherboard. If it's an AMD760MPx chipset board the answer is no as the slots are 3.3-volts. 32-bit PCI cards are 5-volts.

bozo1, thanks.

Now, if I stick a 64-bit riser card on my 64-bit PCI slot, can I stick a 32-bit PCI card in the 64-bit riser card slot? I have the Tyan s2466 motherboard, which I believe has the AMD760MPx chipset, since I am running 2 Athlon MP 1800+ on it.

I'm having some weird issues with my board with the 64-bit PCI riser card in the 64-bit PCI slot. Sometimes it would bootup, sometimes it won't. Not sure if it's a problem with the 64-bit PCI slot with riser, or other problems such as the power supply. I'm trying to stick a 64-bit PCI SCSI RAID card as well as a 32-bit PCI video card in 2 of the 3 available slots on the 64-bit riser card (sitting in the 64-bit PCI slot). Any ideas on what I should do?

Thanks...

No wonder you are having problems. You have your 5-volt video card in a 3.3-volt slot. I'm sure it's not too happy.

Thanks bozo1 for pointing that out. Now I'm stuck in a dilemma. How can I power both the 32-bit video card and the 64-bit SCSI RAID card? Does that mean I'll need to get a 64-bit video card? I think that it would be overkill for a server though...

Do you think I could have did any permanent damage to the board? I can't test it right now because I don't have it in front of me. Please let me know what you think.

Thanks.

Turns out my riser card worked only with 3Vs....I'm getting a replacement soon.
