Is this normal?

I've had my PS3 Slim for nearly 2 weeks now and while I've not had any problems, I am a bit concerned about how hot it's getting on the bottom. When I look at it now there are swirl marks everywhere on the underside like the plastic was almost to melting point then cooled back down.

It's getting so hot that it's beginning to warp the one and a half inch fiberboard shelf it's on. After a long play session the bottom of the shelf is almost too hot to touch.

Is this normal or should I get a replacement while I still have the chance?

You must have a pretty crappy shelf. If you want to return it and get another go ahead but I have a early 80GB and it gets hot and you can hear the plastic expanding. Trust me, you want the heat moving and not stuck in the system.

The Slim does get hot, but it shouldn't make swirl marks. I notice that the shelf I have it sitting on is warm after using it for awhile, but not hot. I would exchange it if its physically messing up the console.

My biggest problem with the Slim is the plastic case popping/cracking when it heats up and cools down. Although from what I've heard/read online its a very common "problem" with the Slim.

Don't know if that is normal or not but perhaps you should get something to act as a spacer between the PS3 and your shelf to put some air between the PS3 and your shelf.

Mine gets my wood really hot too. I need to figure out how to prop it up an inch or so. Or stop using it on my lap.

The PS2 used to get really hot also. They installed a fan for cooling on the bottom of the unit, its the reason why the made the stand to have the PS2 stand on it's side. I did happen to see a stand that was coming soon when surfing through gamestop's webpage last week. Sit it off it's bottom side by some sort of blocks (irony I know) or go swap it in for a new one and say that it is burning your shelf and you just want to swap it out.

If your shelf has no backside for fresh air and no bottom side for fresh air then you need to find something to get the bottom of the shelf or a new PS3 slim will most likely do the exact same thing.

It's a $40 TV stand. Fancy, I know, but as a college student I take what I can get.

I cut some blocks from a piece of scrap wood and propped it up on them so hopefully that helps a little. I just hope those swirls where the plastic was stressed don't screw anything up.

You may still opt to take it back and see if a new one does the same thing at least. Personally, I would take it back.

good idea. what about something made of metal? would that act as a heat sink?

It turns out it was defective. I thought it was normal for the fan to kick into high after the console was on for 5 minutes, but I exchanged it (hooray for 24-hour wal-mart) and the new one is silent. It's been on for an hour and I still can't hear the fan, and the heat seems to be distributed much better. No popping noises either.

It's funny. I've had two 360s that never gave me a problem, but the first PS3 I get is a loud, overheating monster.

This is the way I look at things with electronics:

No company will ever make a product correctly 100% of the time.
