Is this normal?

I was unofficially offered an associate position with a management consulting company (over the phone), I am going to the office tomorrow but I have been hearing that this company asks you to sign a contract stating if you leave the company before 6 months, you cannot work for a competitor for 12 months (which I understand) and you have to pay damages to the firm.

Is this common practice in management consulting?
