Is this normal windows transfer rate between 2 drives?

38.5MB/s transfering 30+ gigs of data between 2 hardrives. one is sata 320gig 7200.10 and other sata 750gig 7200.11, its on a gigabyte DS3 mobo, using the recommended sata connections on mobo.

For some reason im thinking it should be "faster"..but I forget since its been awile since having 2 hardrives on same system. :)

Seems a bit slow to me, but then again, it van vary.

I usually get ~ 50 MB/s+ when copying most of the time on my main systems (which have newer-ish HDDs).

With my older drives, then 38.5 MB/s would be more normal.

I just did a few tests, I'm guessing its just because of the huge amount im transferring at once. I transfered just 4gigs of mp3 files to new drive and it was around 50MB/s.

What's your percentage of free space on both drives?

If you're under 20% free, things start to slow down. Get below 10% and it gets severe.

vista has a TERRIBLE copying algorithm, I estimate Linux's is about 10x faster... I get 700kbs transferring 500mb to a flash drive with 8mb write and 17mb transfer.

I have sp1 for vista..

Drives have plenty of space, the 750gig was brand new, and 320gig had 100gig left. It is normal transfer speed, I read up more on it last night.

Did anyone notice the OP is MOVING not COPYING?

I have not compared the two but I generally prefer to COPY (especially large amounts like the OP is doing) over MOVE because if something goes amiss you can lose data!

That being said, it really depends on the source and target.

For me going from internal SATA with older drives to an eSata enclosure I get 30-50MB/s. This is daily and once and awhile I will reach 70MB/s.

Although I sometimes worry about this, too, I don't believe the delete operation is done until the file has been successfully copied.

I've had it happen a few times with the power going out (darn thunderstorm season!) and even though it says I've lost the file, I never actually do. I always use cut/paste. I'm not sure about things like that, but it seems to copy, THEN cut.
Maybe someone who knows more can enlighten us?

Never had a problem moving stuff to. Then again im not a moron who moves huge amounts of data in middle of a thunderstorm. :p

Transfering files between partitions in my raid array, I usually see 120-150mb/s transfer rates.

Transfering files from my raid array to my backup hard drive, usually around 50mb/s.
