i have some ATA100 cables i got from work, at the end where the connector is blue, there is one little punched out cable ( about 1/2 cmd long) its punched on on only ONE of those cable lines.

but

on some NEW ata100 cables i just got in, they dont have the line punched out, but the old ones still work...?

It's a cable select cable. If you set both devices to cable select instead of master/slave, then they'll automatically run as master on the end connector, and slave on the middle connector. It's not always reliable though, some systems it doesn't work on.

Not really sure what the point of that is. It's not that difficult to set the jumpers to master/slave. The only thing I can think of is if you have a drive that has one setting for "single drive" and another setting for "master with a slave". If you added a drive later you'd have to reset the jumpers on the master drive, but cable select would let you leave it alone.
