okay, i been a user of win2k pro for the past year, and it was rock solid and smooth. i recently brought a new HD and decided to give XP a try. XP seems okay preformaces wise, but a little laggy. i was expecting that little lag cuz of the new GUI and etc... but what is ticking me off is that my computer is having a hard time watching divx and playing a old game of star craft! i dont play much games, but mostly star craft, and watch alot of divxs. right now, inorder for me to watch divxs smoothly, i have to turn every single thing off. even with star craft, it lags. for you star craft fans, i play mostly share type games, and it starts out little choppy, and eventually LAG like hell when u get 10min into it. it feels like its moving at 10fps, and mouse pointer movement is very choppy. am i missing something on this XP? when i had win2k, both of these two things ran great. i left alot of programs running and still able to watch divx smoothly and play star craft. one odd thing i notice is when i dling something with a ftp client such as flash or cuteftp, it eats up ~20% cpu each, making me unable to watch divx at all while dling. that seems just wrong. with only two ftp client running, my cpu usage is already at 50%, making alot of stuffs whacked. here is my comp spec,

[CPU] 1-Intel Pentium III, 599MHz
[Memory] Usage: 147/384MB (38.28%) [4|||| 14------]
[Screen] 1024x768 16bit 75Hz
[Hard Drives] [C:] 6356 MB / 9529 MB [D:] 80397 MB / 104868 MB [E:] 573 MB / 3805 MB [F:] 14040 MB / 25481 MB
[CDRW] LABEL: CAPACITY: 0 MB [CDROM] LABEL: BROODWAR CAPACITY: 609 MB

yea its only a p3@600mhz, but come on, that is more then enough to watch divx while dling something. and it should have no probs playing a 4 year old game of star craft. their must be something wrong, but what? i been trying to treak this forever, but not successful. just so you know, i turn off system restore to increase proformace, but no dice. this is whacked!

how about a list of your hardware?

Also, XP is slower than 2k in actual performance, it boots faster and starts programs faster, but its got extra optimizations to do that, overall it is truely slower, just to some it appears faster.

like was said, reduce the GUI stuff... also U can upgrade your CPU cheap (over 1GHz for around $50) which may be worth considering.

yea, i went to the theme and turn off the GUI stuffs. it still lags on star craft and divx. i swear there must be some thing i missing and causing the high cpu usage when downloading off ftp. it gotta do with logic disk managment or something i read in servies. i double check and both hd +cdroms are on DMA. here is my parts brand,

pentium3 at 600mhz on 133mhz bus
tyan trinty 400 via mobo
384 pc133 sdram
WD120JB
IBM30gb deskstar 75gxp
voodoo3 3500TV
Yamaha pci sound card
dlink ethernet card
speedstream 4060 usb adsl modem

not the greatest system, but it should be more then enough to handle star craft and divx with room left on this box. just so u know, even when i turn off evertying to play divx smoothly, it still eats in the 90% cpu usage. as for upgrading, my mobo only supports up to 750mhz 🙁

Just overall XP has more of a performance system overhead that you have to deal with than 2000. It is just fact that it is a larger OS and with you only having a PIII 600 you are closer to the minimun requirements to run XP than you are with 2000. Is it slower?? Maybe. But it does run much better than 2K.
