Is this normal for roofing "companies"?

(Preface: Thank GOD I'm buying my own house)

Finally, after a little more than a year of runarounds, the landlord is getting a new roof put on the place we're in right now. I'm too lazy to dig up the posts... but I'm sure they're there. It's been since April of last year. Landlord's handyman is imho a shady asshole, let's just say he "started his own business in order to handle the roofing". Long story, don't feel like even cliff's'ing it.

Anyway, a call late yesterday says "We'll be there tomorrow to work on the roof." Um, thanks for the notice... given the timing is incredibly inconvenient.

So we get home tonight around 6pm, there's a pickup in our driveway, shingles all over the back yard and torn up on the roof. Hell, there's a full toolbelt and pitchfork (wtf?) sitting ON my roof right now. Nails and shit everywhere, and I can't even let my dogs out back to go do their business because they'll end up eating shingles and stepping on nails.

Is there a dumpster anywhere? No.

Why the hell is there a pickup truck parked in my driveway? In front of my garage door no less so that I can't even park in my own garage (were I to risk several nails in the tires anyhow)...

Oh, and the best part, my wife noted they took probably half a dozen "breaks" today, where they left the property. In fact, before she came to pick me up from work, they had left for a break. Apparently they decided the break should last through tomorrow.

I've got to say this, the mexicans that came in last year and did like a dozen houses in the neighborhood did WAY better than this crap.

Here's to hoping my car doesn't get broken into tonight.

Moar Update for Day 2:
Well, the pickup truck has been removed from our driveway. Tonight it is parked IN FRONT of our house instead, and tomorrow is trash pickup day - so it's precisely where my trash can is supposed to be. FAIL.

But wait, there's more! They appear to have cleaned up a bit of the shit left around the house today before they left. I discovered where they put it when I attempted to wheel the trash can out to the road. No... it's not in the trash can... it's in the trailer with a couple of mostly flat tires that is now sitting IN MY DRIVEWAY IN FRONT OF MY FUCKING GARAGE DOOR. FAIL.

My wife is going to be livid when she gets home. This should be fun.

Summer roof work...its crazy hot up there..or can be. They should really have a magnetic sweeper for the roof nails that rain down though. Laziness depends on the temp, if its 90+ on the ground, the roofs radiating ridiculous heat.
roof waste shoulda been carted off on a truck on the same day, removing the roof doesn't take more than one day on a normal sized house. that part is relatively easy, its just a pry tear up deal.

I agree, but today was actually quite pleasant with a decent breeze. It was so nice I took 3 separate laps around the building at work today.

Here's the best part - they're not even DONE stripping the roof.

When we rented, we had a roofer come through the ceiling. During a previous round with the roof, the slumlord didn't want to pay for a proper job so he had the tar paper and cardboard crap put directly on the rafters with no decking. We warned the roofers about it but they thought we had to be batshit crazy to think someone would build a roof w/o a deck.

Lube a part of the roof with something very slippery so when they walk on the roof it seems normal until they hit that part and then when they fall off have all the nails, shingles and the pitchfork waiting for them under that spot. :p

Your roofers suck. When my parents had their roof replaced, the guys came out and got it done that day. They also brought giant tarps and a dumpster to collect all the shit that came off the roof. When they left there was no debris anywhere.

Well, with my limited experience of seeing the roofers work on my parents' house last week, that sounds about right. There was a huge truck in the driveway over the weekend, shingles were flying off the roof so my mom couldn't let the dog outside, etc.

I don't think they were complaining since the purpose was to repair hail damage and the insurance covered all 30k though. I think it took them Thursday-Monday (didn't do anything over the weekend), but it's a fairly large house. No dumpster, but the debris was cleaned up each evening.

Yup. I have only done one (with a crew of about seven) large roof. The tearoff of two layers (what the pitchfork is for, flat shovels work better imo) took maybe three hours. Putting the new one on took ~six. That was doing it perfectly and fixing or replacing any problems such as flashing and caulking that we ran across. Not having it done the same day would mean either there are particular issues with the roof or the roofers are dicking around/don't have enough people.

The nails are a problem but the simple solution is to put plastic sheeting about 15 feet out in every direction from the house before tearoff begins. That makes cleaning up the tiny bits of shingles, nails, and sand easy. Then you just run a magnet around a bunch to pick up most of those that were somehow missed.

I had my roof done 3 years ago, the roofers were trying to be careful, but there's only so much one can do on a very high roof.

They did a thorough clean up not to mention they did a stellar job on the roof.

lol I'd love to see pictures of that job. The tar paper must have blown away.

yea but you shouldn't have to do nail pickup yourself.
somethings wrong if the roofing company cant be bothered to spend the 30-40 dollars on a magnet sweeper

More fail. Just checked, and UPS is delivering a package I wasn't expecting until tomorrow. I've got 4 mexicans up on my roof and nobody at home.

Fuck me.

I had my roof done last week. The two guys could barely speak English so I was weary. They had a debris trailer and used paint buckets to gather all pulled nails. They even had a portable toilet! They were slow and methodical but only took a lunch break. It took them a day to strip the roof, a day to shingle it, and a third day to finish and install some new gutters.

I was impressed with the quality of work. I have seen other companies with ten to twelve workers rushing around and completing the job in one day. The workers on my house were in no hurry and the result is a roof with a thirty year warranty.

They should have a dumpster. Ihave had two roofs put on in the last 5 years due to hail. The guys I hire typically get it done in about 2-3 days.

You couldn't even attach the shingles without a deck...what do you nail/staple them to?

Pitchfork is normal, stuff in lawn is normal, they should have a sizeable waste bin though. They need to do a magnet sweep of the yard to pick up hidden debris

Roofing jibs should only take a day absent some massive decayed roofing sheaths needing replaced

Our roofer had huge tarps extending out from each side of the house as they did the tear down, and had OSB board lining the bottom of each side of the house to prevent any possible damage from things bouncing back toward the house. At the end of each day, the place was spotless. Despite using the tarps, they still ran a magnetic sweeper over the entire area just to be certain they didn't miss any nails.

If I recall correctly, the entire job took them 4 days. That was with either 3 or 4 guys working, included a complete tear down & putting a new deck on. (Ours was a plank roof, with planks spaced about 4" apart, and two courses of cedar shakes over the plank, and two courses of asphalt shingles over the cedar shakes. Total cost was $2600.

Around here when you pay a company to redo your roof, a small army of Mexicans descends upon your home in the morning and when you get home from work there's no evidence they were there other than the new shingles covering your domicile.

wait... $2600 for a full tear-down new roof? 4 days? 3-4 guys? Shakes?!!?
Crap!
