Is this normal for an Xbox 360?

Received a brand new Xbox 360 Arcade yesterday, and I'm thinking of exchanging it.

I have 3 brand new game discs (NHL 09, Forza 2 and the Arcade thing that comes with the console). NHL freezes randomly while loading a game (sound cuts off, nothing responds, have to power it off and restart it), this happens about 1 in 3 games... The other 2 discs I occasionally get a "Dirty Disc Error", happened twice with the Arcade games and 3 or 4 times with Forza2.

So yeah, that's a lot of errors in one day. There has to be something wrong with the DVD drive? (the console is a 0838X Falcon with a Lite-On drive...)

If you have the choice to exchange it at the store, do it today. Definately not normal.
A good XBox will work perfectly for 2 years straight, not once giving an error or anything of the sort. Then one day you'll turn it on and have blue stripes across your screen and red flashing lights and you'll scream at your cat and be in a grumpy mood the rest of the day until your wife cooks you supper.

That is not normal. I get a dre every once in awhile and usually I pull out the disk and there is fingerprints and stuff all over it. It rarely happens.

It should not happen on new discs. I've NEVER bad a bad disc error, but then again, I don't buy used games or rent them either. I'd definitely return it pronto.

I've noticed a similar problem with my new Falcon pro unit (manufactured in Sept 2008) that freezes sometimes during loading transitions on several games. The DVD drive seems to stop spinning and the game goes no further than the loading screen. The system doesn't seem to freeze completely, as I can return to the dashboard or turn off the console using the controller.

So far, it's just been in 2 games - Madden '09 and NCAA Football 2008. It's frustrating, as I can finish a game, but it freezes during the main menu load and I am unable to save. Madden '09 came new with the system and NCAA '08 was purchased used. Lego Indiana Jones also came new with the system and it has not frozen once with 25+ loads. Gears of War, also purchased used, also works fine.

I've noticed no other problems with the system, just random freezing during loading from the disc. It seems like it's game specific and not a hardware problem, but I'm not so sure.

I think that's an NXE issue, mine's been doing that too since the update with many games. Hopefully that'll get fixed.

That's a good point. I didn't connect to the internet until several weeks after I got the system. I don't recall having any of these issues until I got online and updated to the NXE.

To clarify, I've only had hanging while loading. Never have gotten the dirty disc error.

Sounds a lot like my problem here. Might want to return it if you can.

I took mine back, got another one, and immediately could tell that there was something wrong with the previous one. My new one works perfectly with no (or very rarely) load errors or crashing.

It might be, I updated to NXE the first time it booted up...

Anyways, I'll get it exchanged, it's one day old. :D

Oops, I meant the slow loading that BlueWeasel was talking about. Mine has never given me a dirty disc error, that's something hardware wrong. Once you get your new one, you'll be in heaven. Thats just starting on the wrong foot with the one you have, dang.

Same here. Of my 3 360s one does it without any HD at all, but the other 2 share my 120gb HD and ever since NXE I have occasional hard freezes on both boxes. And a lot more slow down. The first box is just getting ready to die so I dont count that one. :)

Yep,

I have had one do this.. It got progressivly worse and worse over the course of 6-10months, then it ended up not playing discs at all.

My other 2 have never had a disc read error.

yeah, there was definitely something fishy with the first one's DVD drive.

this one is the same batch number/plant and Lite-On drive also, but the seeks are MUCH quieter, it's almost silent when loading while the other one I could hear the laser moving all the time...
