The local adelphia cable just started to offer internet, and i am probably the first ones to get them. for some reason, i CANT ping anything so is there anything wrong? the only issue i notice so far is a irc server that i usually join. its a small private irc server that works fine on my pacbell dsl, but with adelphia, its not working. it either says timeout or connection refuse. i can connect to everything else such as efnet. the internet seems to work fine, ftp, http, etc..... even bittorrent works.

now the weirdest, i cant ping anything, including yahoo, nor my gateway.

i tried my gateway as well, and it still fails. it appears dns is working, but whats going on here? i ping my friends comp which i know is online, and it fail as well. so should i worry? perhaps adelphia's network is not fully functioning yet? am i missing something here?

One of the things that occured with the blaster worm was a subsequent "good" worm, one that was "supposed" to patch all the bad boxes. It found the infected boxes by pinging on the LAN, and it resulted in a effective Denial Of Service attack.
It is possible that adelphia's routers are swallowing up all pings until this thing settles out. So long as all your promised services work, I would not worry about it.

I'm sitting here now and looking at my cable modem data light with no internal network activity. It's pounding away like I'm doing a massive download, yet Ethereal is telling me that aside from the occasional print server announcment, there is no activity on this side of the router. Welcome to the wild west of the Internet, there's bandits out there! :D
