Hi all just wondering why at 4xAA 16xAF @ 1280x1024 w/vsync, truform etc slows down my performance considerably. Like UT2k3 is at like 30 fps!!! The reason I ask is because....if UT2k3 is getting subpar, how am I possibly going to run HL2 and Doom3 maxed?! Any ideas or comments would be greatly appreciated.

We’re currently investigating an issue related to the forum theme and styling that is impacting page layout and visual formatting. Wonderfully said VIAN - the R420(ati) and nv40(nvidia) are going to be the ones to play doom3 with. But they are going to cost @least 400-500 $$$'s. Look for them in late Spring. Until then - may as well play,play,play-these great games today.
Ya everything runs perfectly maxed out with 0xAA, 16xAF, but I wouldn't mind having full candy on and HL2 being playable. I don't think there will be any problems with Doom3 since it is OpenGL. Also, I was just wondering if an XT would even be able to run HL2 maxed without any slow downs? I know they're the same core only the XT is more overclocked (actually my core is faster than an XT but this darn infineon)

WIth a 9800NP, HL2/Doom 3 will be playable..just not with maxed eye candy. Though heck I'd be thrilled if my card could play HL2/Doom3 with decent FPS..around 30's with mid settings and no eye candy. I suppose it'd be better than shelling out 500 bucks for a new vid card. Of course if you have the money, why not but I wouldn't expect anything now to play next gen games at top quality(at decent frames at least).

VSync on is a huge performace drag. But VSync off can be a visual drag (tearing, jumpy uneven movement).

Well, I doubt even the next generation of video cards will be able to do much better at 1200x1024 res with 16x AF on such a robust graphics engine.I know things have changed since the 9700 cores, but 16xAF for 1200x1024 is a little redundant anyway. At that high of resolution, I would think you would only need 2xAF with 4xAA.
What I'm hoping for the next generation of video cards, like the RV420 and the NV40, will host a less performance hitting trueform ability. Also, the newer games such as half life 2, will be more dependent on precision floating points and shaders which are more GPU intensive than bandwidth intensive. So hopefully even the 9600 can push decent framerates in HL2. Don't forget, not only is the hardware advancing, but the also the backend. The software, the compilers, the assemblers, the code, the games graphic engines themselves are advancing with the hardware. There is more than one side to look out now.
None the less, you shouldn't concern yourself too much about a game that was "suppose" to have come out during the holiday season. The game , and games like it, aren't coming out for at least another 3-6 months (Splinter cell 2, D3, Quake 4, etc..). The important thing as of right now is that you don't have a dead end system in which you cannot upgrade.
