Yen Lam

Is this a male or a female name? I am writing a cover letter and I dont know how I should address this person.

BTW, no phone number, just email posted at my college job listing

you cant tell just by the pronouciation, cuz there are different characters meaning different things that are under the same pronouciation.
even if u have the chinese characters instead of the pronouciation, u can only make a probable guess based on the meaning of the characters.

I know several females named Yen; however, I would not advise guessing. Use a generic term like the one minendo suggested.

dude, that name could go either way...in fact, iirc most chinese names don't denote gender. My sister and I have the same surname (Liu), and the same middle name (Hsien) that comes from some list that's repeated every half dozen generations or so, but the last characters in our names (Fei and Shuen) were picked by our parents b/c they sounded nice or for some random reason. So, can you distinguish between Liu Hsien Fei and Liu Hsien Shuen?

Sorry for the OT little spiel, imo just address it "Dear Yen Lam",

yea unknowable. inexact or bad english translation of names allows for several different chinese characters to be spelled one way in english sometimes.
