I am facing this problem right now. I have a VPR 180B5 Laptop with a Hitachi HDD inside. It seems every now and then, there will be a sec of hard drive access. You can hear the sound "almost click like" and sometimes the HDD LED lit up. I bother me the most is when I am playing a game. It will froze the game while it is doing that, which only last about a sec. I am hoping it is not the "click of death" of the hard drive. Ran SMARTDefender from IBM/Hitachi support site (Can't run IBM Fitness Test without Floppy...). I ran the Extended SMART test, it didn't find any error. I called Bestbuy, they can't ship me a replacement HDD. And they want me to take it in Bestbuy to have it ship to them... I don't now what the hack am I suppose to do now. Any advice?

Thanks

Sounds like it. I've heard this countless times on a bunch of our Latitude LS and L400s at work. Backup anything important you have on there now.

Click of death was coined for Zip drives right? I would back up what you got.

lundog22, is your Hitachi the DK23-CA20 or other from this series?

If yes, these were having the "clicking" problem ,and there was firmware update for this issue partially eliminating it....

From the description of the update:"Hitachi DK23CA Family 10/20/30GB Notebook Hard Drives (DK23CA-10) (DK23CA-20) (DK23CA-30) Reduction of frequent acoustic clicking noise driven by hard drive load/unload mechanism."
