This was a pulled modem and I suspect it's a pci hardware modem since I've seen winmodems before and they're generally smaller, but this isn't as large as a isa hardware modem so I'm not sure.

Deducing from the id numbers from the card, this is what I've found out:

- It's an Aztech MD3858U - Rockwell V90/K56 flex based
- Manual can be found here.
- It's an internal for a PCI slot.
- Drivers here. Look for MD3858-U for NT4 drivers.

Doesn't seem to have drivers for win2k but we'll see if it works on it after I find out whether this is a hardware modem or not. Thanks guys!

When you install does it need a little application that stays in the background?

Interesting question Yucky. I run a winmodem on this current system and don't remember being asked to install a software. That could be the reason why the system hangs for a split second during dialing :)

Back to our topic: I don't have this card installed on a system yet. It's just sitting right in front of me.

Looks like a Win modem. From the stated Minimum requirements in the manual, ie, 166 Mhz and Win 95, 98, and NT.
A hardware modem would be compatable with DOS, Win 3.1, Linux and would not have such a Mhz requirement.
