Is this memory overkill for my system?

I don't know if it's overkill, but it's certainly a ****** value. Go down a level, don't get the very highest-end you can get, save a bunch of money and put it to better use.

I agree, you'd be much better off by spending $200 on 2GB of PC6400, and spending the money you saved on an E6600. You'd get more performance, easier, and guaranteed.😉

or upgrade your gpu (assuming you're gaming)

Check out the daily reviews, I seem to remember a review for the Flex OCZ ram, in it there was a slightly higher budget ram that was running at 1120 speeds. Point is, right now, with ddr2 there isn't much of a point with some of this really high priced ram, because speed isn't so much the factor.

No, he'd definitely be much better off spending that money on a cpu. Unless you know of a gpu that will operate with no system RAM at all?

Here's another alternative.

If the video card is already decent for what you're doing, I'd say go with some of the previous RAM recommendations and look into upgrading to a faster HD like WD's 10k raptor. It's not as sexy of an upgrade as the CPU, but it's a boost in an area that I think most people aren't O/C'ing in.
