Is this legal?

I have a legal copy of Win98 that came with my Gateway. I accidentally scratched the hell out of it, I tried to clean it, but no luck. My roomate also has the same version of Win98. If I install his software with my ID number, is that legal? Can I also burn his copy so I don't run into this problem again? Thanks for the input.

actually i am not too sure, but it does sound legal, as long as you have you own copy then you can use your roomies with your cd key. thats why its recommended to make a burn of all your appz/gamez and only use the back up for everyday use to prevent this exact problem.

As long as you have your user license, you're entitled to using the software on one computer and to a backup copy of the CD. So don't worry and install/copy from your roommate's CD.

you're not paying for the physical CD, you are paying for a license to use the software, so you can use anyone's CD.

As far as I understand you paid money for a "license" to use the software contained on the disc. You did not pay for a license to keep one CD.

Having additional copies are not illegal - only using the software outside the specified license agreement will be illegal. 🙂

You payed for the license to use it, your entitled to your won copy of it. Nothing in the leicense says you have to use the CD that you purchased with the license. Should be perfectly legal.

it may not be technically legal, but I don't think M$oft will bust in the door on you; the sam.... <WHAM> M$oft busts into minus1972's house.

aw crap. 😉

The bottom line is: if you really want to know if it is legal, then you need to read the license agreement.

Even if it isn't legal the chance of getting caught is slim

It is up to you.

Sounds a bit on the hazy side, but I would think you'd be ok. You did purchase it. Read the license agreement to be sure.
