I'm debating to sell my '91 Chevrolet Z28 this summer and getting something that gets quite a bit more mileage but is still fun to drive. It might be a *downgrade* but I'm thinking on getting an '86 Prelude base model and swapping in a b16a motor. Would an engine swap like this be legal in an '86 car? I mean these 4cyl's aren't what you call polluters.

no they're not

engine's have to be of the same class AND newer than the car

ie you can get an 86 civic and throw down a b16a and that'd be legal

if you were to get a prelude, you'd have to get either an h23 or h22 for it

I coulda told you no without even clicking on the link. Nothing is smog legal in California. Pretty much the only way you can get a swapped motor to pass smog is if it's a type of moor that came in the car, na d the motor is as new or newer than the car.

I thought the deal was as long as the motor you are swapping in is newer then if it passes it passes? Granted, the swap I plan on doing puts a newer motor of identical displacement under my hood, but I know people swap motors between Civics, Integras, CRX's, Del Sol's, and in some cases Preludes. Course, you could always do your swap and find a guy who will test regardless of what's under the hood. I know I'll have to, I mean, who's gonna smog a turbo'd Accord?
