Is this legal? About mailing a letter

Often times I send out CDs and small stuff in the mail. Since I don't have one of those little scales I just throw some postage on there and cross my fingers. Like if it's a cd without a case I put 2 or 3 stamps on it. Figure it'll get there. To ensure that it doesn't come back to me I put the receivers name as the addressee (duh) and put it as the return address. This way if there is not enough postage, it'll still get to them and they can pay up the $0.30 or whatever to cover it. I figure this is much better than getting it back a few days later for having insufficient postage. It gets to the person regardless and on time (I figure the receiver would rather pay a quarter which I'd be glad to reimburse rather than wait 5 extra days).

Just wanted to makesure this wasn't some sort of illegal way of avoiding proper postage. Most of the time it's too much (never had one where someone had to pay) and I've never had a problem. Just don't want to get into any trouble or anything.

sending stuff without enough postage isnt a crime. its a crime when some lady gets pissed off at the P.O. for having to pay postage due and just tears the mail from the postal clerk's hands

<-----at the post office WAY too much

At the post office for insufficient?

Here they just leave a little envelope in the box that says you owe them $0.20 and leave the letter.

I thought that TECHNICALLY mailing anything with an intended incorrect return address was a federal offense?

That has happened to me once about 8 years ago. I think the letter required 55 cents and only 32 was on it, but I still got it in the mail anyway.

If the letter doesn't have enough postage here you have to run down to the PO to pay the due postage and then you get the letter.

That might be an inconvience to some people so you might want to check with them before you do it.

Thanks guys. I thought they always delivered the letter. Didn't know it may happen to where they would have to go pick it up. Since something even thinks it may be a felony, I'll just stick my return address on it for peace of mind. Thanks again.

Wasn't it 32 cents back then? I was in 4th grade. Now that I think about it, that was 9 years ago.

Interesting idea. I'd be interested in finding out if this bit can be added to my myriad of useless trivia that I ball up in the back of my brain...

I thought even if mail had insufficient postage it went to dead letter land (or whatever the post office calls it) never to be seen again.
