Is this laptop worth it?

Doesn't look that bad. Sometimes there are cheaper deals ($100 less) for an identical / similar model... could watch out for those.

It's worth it as long as it has what you are looking for in a laptop at a price you are willing to pay.

That one is $50 more and you'll be much happier. I base this on playing back HD video.

On my friends X2 2GHz, with Windows XP, his computer cannot play back 1080 rips smoothly. My 1.6GHz T2330 can play them perfect. Both laptops are using XP. Under Vista, my computer cannot display more than a single frame or so per second. I have an HP C700.

This is just my opinion, but anything other than a ThinkPad is not worth it.

<---Notebook forum...

Anyway...with a laptop the two main questions are first: Purpose and budget.

Once you have those two in mind then you can see if there is anything out there.

A sub $600 laptop today is just about perfect for most people that don't play high-end games.

I prefer smaller laptops for travel and hooking them up to fullsized components when I am stationary. I don't game on my laptops other than basic airport timekillers.

I hunted down an older but more featured/durable model at my desired pricepoint.

OMG WRONG FORUM.

Interesting conundrum though. GMA X3100 on the Acer is crap, but the Turion probably isn't as fast as the Core. Check SlickDeals.net, they usually find great deals on laptops.

Get a dell or a thinkpad or you will be sad when your laptop stops working the day after the warranty runs out.

OP what is your target use?

For example mine was mostly being able to run Consult/OBD software in my car and having a portable for simple stuff like Open Office, email and the like when I am traveling.

I opted for a Dell D410 12" since it was the last of the series with an onboard serial. It also had the trackpoint and trackpad. I picked it up with the live.com 25% off deal for about $150 it was like brand new. I threw in a Samsung 160GB HM160HC. It's a 'centrino' class CPU running at 1.8GHz, I may pinmod it to 2.4GHz if it ever proves too slow.

The only defect were two stuck pixels which were probably there since it was made.

My wife still uses a PIII-M 1.2GHz and with a Scorpio 120GB drive and it's snappy for Office and Outlook.
