Is this just an old wives tale?

I've heard somewhere that it isn't really good for you to have a fan blowing on you constantly for an extended amount of time, like while you sleep.

I've been doing this recently since it's hot out, and I wasnt sure if there was actual risk or not.

Has anyone ever heard of this?

I have done it my whole life over my mothers objections and I am still alive. I suspect this comes from the same school of thought as going out into the cold without a coat causes you to get a cold.

The only thing I can possibly think of is that maybe they think the air is moving too fast and you might not get a full breath? That's pretty f*cking thin, though. Anorexic. Sounds more along the line of saying bless you when someone sneezes because they die for a split-second. :D

I think I was told it had something to do with your muscles. Like it isn't good for them or someting.

The more I think about it , the less it makes any sense.

Yes it's an old wives tale.

I can't sleep without a fan blowing on me and have been that way for about 10 years now. No health problems here.

My chiropractor told me that muscle stiffness/pain/whatever can be caused by this. I don't know what the medical reasoning is, if any.

When you're awake, your body produces more heat of course. If you fall asleep and the fan continues to blow on you,
but at night the temperature cools down and your body is no longer producing as much heat.

Spooner,

I don't know about a fan, but one night I fell asleep directly in the path of an air conditioner. I woke up the next morning with a lung infection. Was on anti-biotics for a week or two to cure. :(

I hate it when I leave my body and fly around and some idiot has left a fan on. I got a big hole in the middle of my torso one time from passing through one. I had to visit a sadhu to fix it.

Moving air can really change the effects of either a really hot or really cold environment. I wouldn't think that either of those apply to a normal sleeping situation...unless you were sleeping right in front of an window AC unit. Muscle fatigue and soreness might be the result of poor body posture as if when you curl up to retain your body heat.

That said, my wife and I have slept with a fan blowing over us for the last 2.5 months.

No, that's not an old wives tale. Some people sweat when they sleep. The air from the fan cools you down. You're muscles are relaxed when you sleep, so when they cool down it's really easy to wake up with pain in your back or neck. Happened to me quite a few times, until I got smart enough to sleep in a t-shirt.

My mom used to tell me the same thing when I was little, so I pointed the fan at my little brother while he was sleeping to see what would happen. He woke up and barfed. Very weird. Now, when I sleep with the fan on and my doggie's in the room, she barfs in the morning too. It happens every single time I have the fan on. So now, she sleeps outside!

What other dodgy experiments did you put your little brother through? Hope he's still alive... ;)

Like others said, I think the deal with constantly moving air is that it cools your body down too much, increasing the possiblility of catching a cold, and also tends to dry out your skin and throat. I have made the mistake of sleeping directly under a fan before, and I had a terribly sore throat in the morning.

I did not throw up, though... What exactly did you do to your poor brother, crantang?

Yup.

I had it happen to me a few times. Couldnt move my neck for a day or so. Now I'm paranoid about having a fan blow on me directly when I sleep.

It can cause throat irratations and lower your immune system response due to your body temperature being lowered (just cover up with a sheet or a thin blanket), but other than that, it's harmless.
