Is this hardware Failure Possible?

I just recently bought an AMD 2600+ processor and put it into my old system. When I turned it on I got a blank screen even though power was running. I then tried my old processor again and got the same thing. So I tried it with my other system and got the same thing again. Now with my other machine I can't get video either. So my question is, if I put in a AMD 2600+ into a machine with a 300W power supply and if the power supply isn't enough can it kill the power supply so that it can't even run the machine after the failure? After using the 2600+ in the machine I can't even get the cd-tray to open up with or without the 2600+ in the system nor do I hear my hard drives booting anymore. I've checked for cmos issues and reset the bios via jumpers and still nada. Any help would be appreciated.

Hmmm, that shouldn't screw up your PSU. 300 watt should be enough for a 2600 if it is from a reputable maker like antec or like like. Maybe you can try reseting the CMOS and then reinstalling your processor. You can do this by pulling the little round battery on the mb out for a few seconds and placing it back in.

Two of my towers are Antec and the other one is Enermax or something along the lines of that name. How could the processor though be shorting out the cmos of every computer I've tried it in? Doesn't seem likely.

This is the process that I have went through that caused the problem. I have 2 computers up and running. One is a amd 1700+ and the other is a amd tbird 1.1 ghz. I took out the 1700+ and put in the 2600+. The mobo supports the speed. I put it in and turn it on. It boots and all the fans turn on yet no video. I take the 2600+ out and put the 1700+ back in and it repeats, powers on, no video. I tested the ram in my other machine and it works fine. Tested video card in other machine and it works fine. So I then thought maybe I fried my board. Went and bought a MSI kt400 mobo. Put the 2600+ in and get the same problem.

So I then put the 2600+ into my other machine, replacing the 1.1ghz tbird(mobo supports the speed) and get the same problem once again. Now all 3 machines will turn on but recieves no video. I can't even open a cdtray in either of the machines now.

I thought there was a chance of a short in the system so I took out the mobo put it down on some cardboard and connect it with the vid card and boot it up. Problem still persists. Both of my machines ran fine till I put the 2600+ in my machines. Could a processor damage a machine this severly? The power can't even boot my HD's or Cd-roms anymore. I get LED's to light up and fans to spin but nothing beyond that.

You don't say much about you first 2 mobos, but some of them take a bios upgrade to use a Thoroughbred or Barton cpu and will screw up the ram timings if you put one in without the upgrade. Sometimes clearing the cmos will fix it so a T-bird or Palomino will work again, sometimes you have to flash the bios. I don't know if the KT400 needs a bios upgrade or not. I doubt it is a power problem with the cds though, more likely the bios gets stuck at a point that does not allow activation of the drives yet. A short would also cause the psu to kick out.

I heard once that bad AMD CPUs can take out a mobo, I don't know for sure if it's true or not. If I were you however, I would try a new PSU w/ one of the systems and one of your good old CPU's. If it works you know it was the PSU. If not it could be the mobo.

After using the 2600+ in the machine I can't even get the cd-tray to open up with or without the 2600+ in the system nor do I hear my hard drives booting anymore.
... sounds like a power issue.

As far as the 2600+, I would RMA that sucker ASAP for a replacement.
Good luck!
