I'm working on a clients dell dimension basic pc with windows xp home and service pack 1 installed along with some norton firewall. Remote desktop was enabled also. Cable internet connection straight to the cable modem with no router or firewall.

14 year old female chats on some yahoo chat room and along comes some sicko dude who she stupidly chats with and he finds out she is a young female and threatens to harm her computer if she doesn't show him what he wants to see via the webcam she has on.

Somehow the webcam becomes disabled and there are pictures removed and files renamed to weird things that obviously someone did.

This is what has been described to me. I need to prevent this from happening again if it really happened or whatever. You can tell them to change yahoo names and stay out of chat rooms but a 14 year old female will do as she pleases. What would be the best things I can do. I'm thinking router for sure. I've renamed the computer and disabled remote desktop along with all the normal spyware removal. Anything else?

though you probably have done so, virus scan the heck out of the computer looking for backdoor trojans.
Good luck

Creating an admin account and giving normal users limited accounts is a very nice setup. Unfortunately, it's probably going to be harder for you to teach your client how to install/uninstall programs.

Dude, you can't protect stupid people from themselves. Run as fast as you can from these people.

What kind of internet connection do they have? A reformat on a dynamic ip connection should get rid of him easily. Try using a router with a firewall from now on.

yep, next thing you know the girl is wind up missing a kidney and lying in a bathtub of ice, and they'll find a way to make you responsible because they 'thought you protected her"
