Hello again. I visited my local PC part distributer, and an employee recommend that I get an Athlon 64 3000+ instead of an 3500+ because the 3000 is faster. Is this true? Does one of them overclock better than the other? Thanks in advance

If the A64 3000 is a 939 cpu and the new 90nm ones - then in a way yes. At stock speeds the 3000 is slower than the 3500 (obviously).

However, anandtech was able to make an easy overclock of the 3000 to near fx cpu speed (55) I believe.

A64 3000 Overclock potential is great. Must have been what he wanted to say.

Look up a recent article on this. It has benches and settings and all listed.

Well, what are you going to use your system for?

What components do you currently have or are going to get?

If you are going to overclock - then buy the 90nm 939 3000 cpu. - Do you have good quality ram?

Thank for all the help. Here is the situation, Im going to be getting new ram, new mobo, new processor, new case, and a new video card. Im wanting to spend around $1000 or less. Thanks again.

Edit: And Im going to be gaming with the rig too.

Ok...well Since you can save about 100+ on the cpu by going with a A64 3000+.

The money you saved would be put to better use on a better video card. The change from a 3000 to a 3500 is small in gaming. The change from a Mid level gaming card to a high level gaming card is huge.

So A64 3000+ seems like your best price/performace.

Pixle.

I think there's some misleading information being thrown about...

The truth is that the best bacng for the buck is the 3000+ IF you are going to overclock.

BUT...

If you want the fastest machine, get the 90nm 3500 as it will be able to pull a better O/C than the 3000+ because it's a better chip to begin with...

I'd guess the crack smoking computer whiz was recommending the 3000 90nm over the 3500 120nm
