Is this good enough?

Just got this computer together and it cost me under $400 belive it or not. I was wondering if this setup is good enough to play current games and games when DirectX 10 comes out.

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ OC'ed to 2.8Ghz
Radeon X800PRO 256MB @524Mhz core, 1Ghz Memory clock
Corsair XMS (2x512MB) Cas Latency=2

I also plan on buying a DirectX10 video crad when they come out, so I wouldnt be surprised if the X800PRO won't play next generation games well.

Do you guys think this is good enough? Any Recommendations? Thanks!

your setup is better then mine, slightly. your card will play next gen games, maybe not with super high settings. I play almost everything out now on my x800 vanilla with a 3700+ CPU (not overclocked) with the settings turned up pretty high.

you'll be good for next gen, unless you need all the eye candy in the world.

Your CPU is a lot better than mine but I play Oblivion on an X800 Pro and it runs great. You should probably turn off Grass. It looks horrible and is a big performance killer.

However, with your issue of DirectX 10, I'm pretty sure the X series wont be able to support it or run any games based on it.
Granted, some games will let you drop down a notch. Heck, Half-Life 2 lets you go down to DirectX8 or even 7, but it looks like ass.
The X800 Pro just wont have the power to handle anything in the next generation.

won't be able to handle it well, but it will run with less eye candy, and a lower resolution. I played Far Cry on a Gforce 4MX, which sucked pretty much when it came out. which was a few years before Far Cry, at least. It will be a good amount of time before games start hitting the market that won't run at all on a X card. I'd say 2 or 3 at the least

Alright its good to hear that Oblivion runs well on an X800PRO. Thanks for the grass tip shortylickens I'll look into that once I get the game.

@QueBert Far Cry with GeForce 4MX?!?!? Is that even possible?

Also QueBert, that 3700+ of yours is a good $66 more expensive than my 3800+ because the 3700+ runs at 2.2Ghz and has 1MB of L2 cache. The 3800+ runs at 2.4Ghz and has 512KB of L2 cache. I heard that cache only has a 5% impact on games at te most. What do you guys think? I really didn't think that the extra 512KB cache and -200Mhz were worth $66 so I went with the 3800+

It looks like your questions were all pretty well answered ... so I won't go through that part. I did want to say that you did a good job on building your system for $400.00. Pretty nifty for what you spent!

If you're careful with your parts selection, you can probably come pretty close at NewEgg. Whether or not you stay under it will depend on what hardware you have available that can be reused.

The A64 s939 3800 (single core) is currently selling for $147.99 at newegg. Or, if you prefer ... you could go with an A64 s939 3200 for $99.00. Overclock it, and put the extra $50.00 saved toward the cost of a better video card. If you're a gamer, you'll benefit more from the higher end GPU.

I think you won't notice, I bought the 3700+ because it was cheaper where I got it.

I can point you towards some good deals...what components are you looking for?

My CPU-$142
Video Card-Already had that
Motherboard-$68
RAM-$102
Case-Was $120, bought it for $20 NEW thanks to this forum and the awesome people on it.
Fan+Heatsink-$24

Thats around $365 if you include shipping. The video card would bring you about $20 over the $400 mark(If you can find an X800PRO for sale nowadays)

Still not bad for a pretty good system.
