snopes not found, only tagline is "New trend at dog parks, nails in pieces of cheese, if you take your dogs to dog parks, please be careful!"

anyone hear of this?

did my own digging

HOUSTON - A startling photo with a warning for dog owners quickly made the rumor mill on Facebook over the weekend, hitting a peak by Monday morning.

The photo shows pieces of cheese with nails inside them. The warning claims, "New trend at dog parks, nails in pieces of cheese, if you take your dogs to dog parks, please be careful!"

So is it true? Well, yes and no.

According to ThatsNonsense.com , an isolated incident of "nails-in-cheese" was reported by a Spanish language news website in July 2011. The report claims a dog walker in a dog park in Buenos Aires found the cheese with nails in a kennel.

The news report has the same photo that is being passed around on Facebook.

ThatsNonSense.com points out that there have been no similar reports of nail-spiked cheese in dog parks anywhere else in the world.

Any dog expert will tell you, there are probably other things more common that owners should look out for at the park -- including the potential for disease and the occasional run-in with an unfriendly dog .

....why?

it's like the razorblade in the apple thing. has that ever actually happened? if so, why did they do it?

This was on reddit about a week ago, I have trouble believing it. Its probably started by the same wackos who say they put razors in kids candy @ halloween

wouldn't surprise me if it was done by some nutcase. but i doubt its something 99% have to worry about.

There will always be wackos out there.

Local hikers trying to preserve their woods from outsiders have done something similar by putting nails out on the trails to injure dogs paws and pop the tires of mtb riders. They also have put fishing wire up high along trails to try and behead mtbers.

And at out local dog park, some jackass put chocolate all over the place to get the dogs to eat it.

soooo here is the actual source to the rumor mill:

The Pet Adoption Center warned late on that dog food was found nailed inside the kennel in Centennial Park in the City of Buenos Aires.

"A few minutes ago I returned from walking my dogs for Centennial Park. As always went to the kennel and the floor had bits of ham and a piece of sausage thrown," the person who found the food through the social networking site Facebook.

"They do not pay much attention until I inadvertently step on one and saw that inside was a nail. When we started to look at all that he had drawn, were all the same. The lift and throw. The bits of food were scattered throughout the kennel and had nails in tip filed down. "

The Center recommended warn dog walkers about the fact.

Nails: $2
Cheese: $3
Starting a rumor that will circulate on the internet for 1000 years: Priceless

Why do people do this crap? It's terrible. It's like the antifreeze thing. People will leave out bowls with antifreeze and dogs will drink it and die. Why, just why? You can't even let your dog loose in a park anymore, then again, most laws don't allow it anyway, but that's besides the point. Stray dogs and wild life are effected by this crap too.

That is what I was going to ask, wouldn't chocolate and aspirin be a better choice then nails?

I could be wrong, but my thought is the nails will make them bleed in the mouth, they'll taste the blood, and will chew more and more. So it's a more cruel way to go.

or they'll eat the cheese and be forced to send a nail through the digestive system...

that was the first thing that came to my mind, as well.

IIRC, the only documented case of razor blades in apples at Halloween was of a step-dad trying to injure his step son.

Of course...then it became a huge frenzy that some horde of evil strangers is going to set out to injure little trick-or-treaters.

There have been a few similar cases in Toronto. Someone had baited hot dogs with rat poison in a dog park a couple years ago. IIRC, one dog did die. There was also an incident where somebody had embedded razor blades into wood blocks and hid them in the sand on a city beach. More recently, someone was hiding pins inside sausages at a grocery store. Not even an employee either. Just some random old lady.

The cops will tell you that these cases are isolated. It's rare, but the sick f---s do exist.

The nails in cheese has been a long rumor...the problem now with both the internet and SOCIAL media like facebook you will get a lot of people that are sick duplicating this.

Caveman is right on the MTB and dog issue...it's part hikers and part motorcross people that saw their 'private' areas turn public and then motorized vehicles banned.

They have gone as far as build traps in landing zones for the bikers.
