The amp probably blows, the guitar, i have no idea because i never tried that company. Just keep in mind, you get what you pay for.

If you're a beginner (never really played before), it might do ok. These packs are sold at most music shops. The guitar itself is probably allright, but the AMP is really ... not good. But if you just want it to learn how to play, then that's fine. Just don't expect to sound like guitars you hear bands playing on, because it's not going to.

I guess a guitar and amp for $100 is a good deal, but those are probably very low quality items (never heard of V-tone). If you're just going to mess around with it every once in awhile then it might be ok, but if you plan on actually playing you should make an investment into a decent guitar and amp. This guitar will probably not sound very good at all, break easily, and cause you to have to replace it early

Guitar God 101

Step 1: Purchase an Ibanez guitar. (Good model to start with would be an GRX40)
Step 2: Listen to and study as much music by Joe Satriani as possible (Recommended CD's: Crystal Planet, Surfin with the Alien, his recent Anthology CD is a must as well)
Step 3: Take lessons if you haven't already done so. Get recommendations for your instructor (lots of mediocre instructors out there)
Step 4: Practice, practice practice, and more practice. (Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect!)

Don't forget to get yourself a decent Wah pedal. Purchasing a decent wah pedel alone will keep you interested in pursuing guitar (recommend a Dunlop "Cry Baby" 525Q)

I would also like to recommend a DVD: Joe Satriani Live from San Francisco. (this music DVD is perfection. It will make your hair stand on end, and every mere mortal that witnesses it. It will surely become the best DVD in your collection, music or otherwise)


After a couple of years you will need to upgrade your guitar. At that point, far more choices for you, but for now, stick with a moderate Ibanez - which is still an incredible kicka$$ guitar in my opinion.

Check this little pack out.....it is a very good deal for what you get. Guitar port alone is normally about 169.00!

A friend of mine has this guitar as a result of wanting the guitar port (he was gonna give the guitar to his daughter, he has an ernie ball guitar) and I played around with it for awhile. The guitar isn't half bad and in the pack it is a great deal.

It's fact that people who start on electric stay motivated throughout their learning years far more than those who start on acoustic. I had an acoustic for 6 weeks before *cough* accidentally *cough* stepping on it and getting my parents to buy me an electric. I was 100 times more excited to learn guitar after that. Nothing like the pucker factor of your first electric guitar. Fundamentally, I find it easier to learn on an electric. Easier to find the "sweet spot" of the notes. More rewarding IMHO. Once you get your first decent wah pedal and pedalboard, it's the true beginning.

The Ibanez pack is nice, but don't get it from musicians friend. Places like Guitar Center sell those beginner packs at a big discount all the time (they hope you'll sign up for lessons with them after buying one of those packs)

My personal choice would be a BC Rich Warlock starter set. But I'm funny like that.

I have never tried a sqiuer, but people seem to not like them. They are cheap though. I personally do not like those packages, but if you really have no idea what to get, it is, unfortunaltely, your best choice. If you are gonna spend above $250, I advise buying everything seperatley.

The main thing is to have fun. Remember to change strings regularly and wipe them down after each use with a little rubbing alcohol.
Crusty strings are no fun to play.

I bought a Fender pack to start out with. It sounded okay, but the damn thing would go out of tune after 5 minutes of play.

So I returned it and bought a Epiphone Sheraton II ($550) that sounds sweet, has great sustain and fvcking good tonal quality. I bought a Vox amplifier from my friend for $45.

Now I just need to find time to practice. Any tips from the experts?

No tricks or anything in guitar, just practice. The way i practice (or used too, i am way too busy now) is that i would pratice chords by playing along with some cds and then i would take time to practice some scales. If you want good practice with scales, buy a scales book, memorize teh scales and play some Oasis songs. They are good to play along with because Noel Gallager is very by the book when it comes to technique, so you get good pratice with scales when you play his slower solos.

BTW: Epiphone Sheraton II, I want one!
