Call the manufacturer and check it out.

If not call them back and tell them that your high flammable infant daughter was checking her email and could have died. And you want to know who to send the lawsuit at for faulty design. Or they could just send you a new one.

Pre-unibody Macbook Pro?

That's hella dangerous right there. You might want to take that thing outside and put it in a fire proof container. Those things go off like a firecracker when they burst. Lithium oxidizes violently. They usually puff up like that if they're overcharged. Take your laptop to a Genius Bar or some other authorized Apple repair shop to get it fixed.

Be careful buying cheap third party batteries too unless you know they're reputable.
 
Serious question. If a battery is doing this, how do you safely dispose of it?

If Lithium Ion is close enough to Lithium Polymer, pierce the coating of the cell and soak it in salt water for a day or two. Then it will be safe to toss in the garbage.
 
That's probably one of those Sony batteries that were recalled a few years ago. Take it to the Apple store and see if the recall is still good.
