Just wondering if I could purchase AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Deneb 3.0GHz Socket AM2+ and put it into my mobo that i purchased in June 2008 (link is here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130136)

The motherboard says it supports the AM2+ chipset type, however, it doesn't say it can support the Phenom II series. I figure if I can use that Phenom II in my existing mobo, it would be a really nice upgrade from the existing processor i'm using, AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Windsor 3.2GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2

Quick question though....if my board only supports DDR2 memory, would there be any benefit of getting an AM3 processor? Or, would my board be able to support DDR3 memory if I installed an AM3 processor?

(I think i'm walking a thin line with the topic and forum location :))

Your board can only take DDR2. The only reason to get an AM3, is those are the more recent and faster processors.

As for walking the thin line, not even close. Its a question directly related to your original post. We are not anal here at Anandtech.

The MSI K9A2 is a great board that will support just about any AMD processor to date (not sure on thubans yet)

I have used both a 720BE and currently run a 940BE in the board with great success.
