Is this CPU burned?

My girlfriend said his PC died today, after several times of motherboard-beep-filled shutdowns. Even after a CMOS reset, the motherboard now won't turn on (only for a nanosecond, also spinning up the CPU and PSU fan, so I presume these two are okay, as is the motherboard itself).

I suspected the CPU to be faulty, but after hopping it out, besides some tiny discoloration, I found no major burn marks...or..? I shoot some pictures, could anyone say otherwise?

(As you can see, it's a Barton-filled Athlon 2800, I sadly can't test it with another CPU as I have no replacement for this old socket... )

Thanks

with a system that old i honestly would check the motherboard and PSU for the capacitor plague to make sure it isnt that. otherwise, it is entirely possible that some chip in the system simply died due to quantum wear and tear on the substrate layers, which resulted in electrons tunneling through the circut walls into other paths, effectively destroying the chip

the cpu looks good, I have athlon xp's which look far worse and still work perfectly.

I say it's the psu or the motherboard (look for leaking caps)

Did you purposefully post the same picture 5 times?

I don't see anything drastically wrong with the CPU in that pic, but that doesn't mean anything with regards to functionality: it coudl still be dead.

It seemed to me that the sealant is missing from the core far left in the image. Could be some evidence.

I had several Xp's die, and they all looked perfect. I would just replace motherboard/cpu/memory.
