Yeah, While I can't say I've ever heard someone say carnita, the word carnitas is plural. The "las" form of the is used for carnitas.

I guess what seems weird is the store that has the sign near me, only shows burritos on it, almost like Carnitas is just one thing. It just seems weird saying it in my head even if it is correct.

Carnitas are chunks of meat.

1) Chunks of meat is back.
2) Chucks of meat are back.

Which sounds correct? Not that either are masterpieces of sentences, but #1 is the one that should sound wrong to you.

English is not my first language but I would figure anything that's plural would use are and anything singular would use is. If there was only one carnita then it would be is, but since they more than likely serve more than one per day they make it plural. I have no idea what a carnita is, looks like just a different name for a wrap? Either way those look good, I'm hungry now.

Carnitas are marinaded (usually) and grilled chunks of pork. Del Sol's version looks shredded but I suppose that's for the best as it would be more certain that they are cooked thoroughly.

In the past I have had places make a Carnitas burrito and they indeed had the meat in chunks, it also had a lot of fat. Its been many, many years since having one like that, it all seems they used shredded now a days, which I prefer.

Carnitas is a food item. It was gone. Now, it (carnitas) is back.

It's not plural in the same sense that soup isn't plural.

Plural noun. Soup isn't plural, because the plural of soup is soups.

Notice how it is described as just a noun. Example sentence from second link: For lunch, Olivia's offers a selection of soups, sandwiches, salads, pizza, hotdogs and a meat-and-two soul plate.

Sure, though I think you're missing the point.

The word Carnitas is also used to describe a singular substance with a customary method of preparation, like stew describes little meats and pieces of carrot, that has a somewhat different meaning than the specific literal definition of the word and thus can properly be used in that manner. See Chipotle's usage that I posted above.

No. The word exists only as a plural as it refers to several things in one batch. Carnitas means PIECES of meat and is never used to refer to a single PIECE of meat. The fact that some people misuse the word does not make it right, it only makes them wrong. Carnitas is plural, it's always plural and it cannot be properly used any other way.
