Is this considered cheating?

Everyone tells me the iPod dock remote is a waste of $40 because it only does four things. I would like to be able to listen to it through a stereo and play, pause, stop, etc. is fine.

It was suggested to take a learning remote to the Apple store and program all the functions from the remote.

If it works and saves $40 then all the better.

That's a definite grey area. I don't think they'd be happy to have it happen, but I don't think that they can really do anything to you other than get pissed off and kick you out.

Absolutely not stealing, though store employees may not take kindly to it.

If you have trouble getting them from the store I would find somebody who has the remote + an IR receiver on their PC & have them record the codes for you.

For those of you who think it's a "gray" area consider all the learning remotes that come with pages of codes for all the pre-programmed devices.

Hmmm... fascinating! What app can record the transmissions through the IRDATA window? Seems to me this could be used for those boxes on fire trucks that turn a red light green as they use IR too.

Someone actually made a device to change lights to green. I'm sure it cant be that though, although its probably illegal at this point.

There are learning remote applications out there, many are freeware or shareware. You'll need an IR pod for your PC to teach your remote anyway, if you buy a pod it will likely come with compatible software.

As for traffic devices no remote control is strong enough for that.

You can, however, build one for next to nothing:

No remote control will have the power but if you have the codes (logic) these can fire any IR laser diode array that will have incredible range. Devices outputting several WATTS (a legal laser pointer is .005 WATT) are available and cheap.

Of course why would anyone need to control their iPod from a few blocks away? The guy with the heavy metal christmas music and lights probably would! 😉
