Is this common after a bios flash?

I just flashed my Epox 8K5A2+ to the newest bios. Before I did it I loaded the optimized defaults so it wouldn't be OC'ed anymore. After the flashed I raised my FSB back to 166 for my CPU overclock. Well, I remember before MBM5 and CPUID would say my CPU was running at 1.753 ghz with 166 fsb (333mhz bus speed). Now it says I'm running at 1.740 ghz with a 165.7 fsb, 331 total bus speed. And I notice it changes sometimes, like it will all of the sudden change to a 166.1 fsb, then go back down. I want my 13mhz back dammit!

Any reason for concern?

btw, the cpu is an athlon xp 1600+ (stock speed 1.4ghz @133fsb)

nothing to be concerned about... but it does kinda suck losing a little speed :)

but its normal for different bios revisions to slightly change the actual fsb or vcore or vdimm , etc, etc even when you keep the settings the same

hehe, glad its at least normal.

I dont want to bump up my fsb anymore b/c then I'll loose my 1/5 divider on the AGP/PCI lock...

For every 5MHz you raise the bus, you'd up the PCI 1 MHz, so it's safe to up it a little more.

I was always wondering this, if I up the FSB, say, 5mhz past 166 will it be out of wack just that 5 mhz, or does it then comply to 133 (the boards default fsb) so its WAY outa wack?

hopefully you can understand what I just said, haha.

With a 1/5 divider, when you raise the FSB 5 MHz, you take the 171 bus, divide it by 5 and get 34 as the PCI speed. I wouldn't go over 36 on the PCI bus, meaning a 176 MHz bus.

Alright, so you think I could do 171mhz fsb safely(as in no risks at all)? My 1600+ does 1.74ghz with stock voltage, so it should do nearly 1.8 at that...

I'd just about guarantee you'd be able to do 171 safely. I'd be pushing the thing to 176 myself. Does the board have a 1/6 divider?

Have you guys ever tried the Bios Savior? Theres a company out there called Holomaxx Trade that carries them.

Bios Savior

It's suppose to save your bios in case you mess it up.

Nope, only the 1/5. I'm gonna try 171 in a little while.

I just upped it to 171, it runs fine now at 1.79 ghz.... Damn, I want 1.8 !

I dont need to go 5 mhz at a time do I. I can set it to 173 or something just to get to 1.8 right?

The only thing I'm worried about is how far I can safely get my AGP/PCI speeds outa wack, I dont want any problems....

yes you can up it 2 notches (10mhz) at a time. its when you are really pushing the limits of your system that you only want to raise the system clock in 5mhz increments (fsb in 1mhz increments). and if your system doesnt post, then just go back and try 172fsb. if that doesn't post either, then i'd say your stuck at 171fsb until you can figure something else out.

I just raised it to 173. Now I'm sitting at 1.81 ghz. This is good enough for me!
