Is this caused by a virus?

My computer keeps crashing and it's running extremely slow. When I ran task manager (I can't run it anymore because it just crashes) it always says svchost is using up 100 percent of my cpu, and sometimes windows says a critical process was ended and someone forced my comptuer to shut down. I searched this and some sites said this is because of the msblaster virus, but I couldn't find msblast.exe or msblaster.exe anywhere on my computer and there was never a process like that running on my computer. I can't run any programs except mozilla firefox, and a lot of the times when I shut down my computer it says a process called "MPWnd_hooker.exe" is running and has to be ended. Is that file the virus? I don't know what it is because I searched the internet and I only found a message boards and some french sites. I couldn't find anything about this on symantec.com, mcafee.com or any other security websites. Does anyone know why my computer crashes and is so slow, and is it because of the MPWnd_hooker.exe?

Hi, welcome to the forums...

If I were you, I'd run Ad-Aware, Spybot: Search & Destroy, and CCleaner for good measure. As soon as that is done, update your virus definitions and run a full scan on your system. Best of luck!

Yeah, I would, but I can't run anything. I can only run some programs like paint, notepad and mozilla firefox. Everything else freezes up.

Boot it into safe mode, you can do an Ad-Aware scan from there. If you haven't downloaded it or don't have it, boot into safe mode with networking support and see if you can download it through Firefox.

To get into the safe mode menu, hit f8 intermittently while booting and you should be presented with boot options.

Meltdown is right.
Also try spybot, and trojanhunter and the MS beta version of their spy detector. - Based on a good line of products for a change!!

Update them all if you can - manually if you have to from another computer.
Then do what Meltdown suggests and boot into safe mode.
Run all the scans.
Reboot into safe again.
Run them all again.
Boot into normal.
Run all the scans again to be sure.

GOOD LUCK

It appears to be some garbage that comes with msn plus.

If your lucky getting rid of ms plus will get rid of it.

if not need to find a tool or delete manually.

What antivirus program do you have (please give the version, not just the brand: Norton Antivirus 2004, not just "norton")? What's the date of the antivirus definitions? If you have antique antivirus software (really old version) or none at all, you can get a free 15-day trialware of McAfee VirusScan 9.0 from here, it's pretty straightforward. Also, if you don't have a firewall, grab basic ZoneAlarm, which is permanently free.

I'm going to try to download windows xp service pack 2, then try that stuff. I'm not sure if I can run those programs because my computer keeps crashing.

NOOOOOOO
You must get rid of the problem before you install sp2.
Otherwise you may trash your system completely.

yes, don't install sp2 until this problem is solved unless u feel like reinstalling windows. go to run under the start menu and run 'msconfig' One of the top bars is startup programs. http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php contains a great list of all the ambigious program names that appear there. Get rid of the ones u don't need. Many times MS blaster can hide in there under certain files names and some worms even make a random file name and put it here.

Ok, I will try that stuff first. I'm sure it is not because of msgplus, because you can choose not to install thet malware on the license agreement.

Edit: I couldn't find the process on that site. I searched up that process on google, and I found a lot of people posting in forums saying that their computer's processor was being 100% used up like mine. How come so many people have it but none of the antivirus sites have it?

Montag451,

Windows Messenger and Microsoft Messenger are totally different things.

Shootthemessenger only works for Windows Messenger.
