Is this buyer trying to pull something on me?

I sold some drives from an old computer. The last minute buyer won it and emailed me to tell me he wanted to back out of it. I typed in 18 point font that the auction is for used drives, but the idiot thought they were brand new.

I told him he's to complete the transaction or I will have to report it as unpaid item to get my fees back. He reluctantly agreed to buy it and asked me if they both work. A few days after item arrived at his door, he tells me one of the drives is dead and he's demanding a full refund. I tested them BOTH before I put them up for sale. I asked him to return the item and he'll be given a full refund once I verify it is defective and free of obvious tampering/damage.

He responded "never mind, i see I got screwed".

Is this guy trying to pull something on me? What should I do? I don't really feel like getting a chargeback or retaliatory neg.

Chargebacks are hard to stop especially with those rats at paypal.

I did already. He claims one of the drives isn't working. He wants refund. I want the item back for inspection.

I want all this to go w/o causing him to leave me a - feedback.

But he doesn't want to take the time to ship them back to you, right? Probably just trying to cut his losses. If he does leave a neg, you could try to get it removed.

Which may be difficult. That's usually why whenever someone wants to back out of an auction I let them (maybe ask them to pay the FVF if there is no other bidder). I know it's a bad habit for them but it saves me the headache of having a buyer who isn't really interested in the item.

You won't get charged back with paypal because you actually did ship him something.
Paypal doesn't want to get involved in whether the hardware worked or not.

Now as far as feedback goes he can leave you negative and you can also post negative for
him and cast a bad light on him if indeed he was scamming you.

Sounds like you were dealing with a non reading idiot and I wouldn't be surprised if you don't see other
"problems" in this guy's account. Some people just don't need to be buying on Ebay..... :)

There will be no chargeback if the buyer has received his item. PayPal does not warrant against "condition" of the item, so long as it's the same item as advertised.

Yup this seems like the case. Just reiterate if he really thinks he was screwed to send you back the drives for inspection... tell him you weren't out to screw him at all, he placed a bid on your item. Ebay bids are binding contracts, so he should have fcking thought long and hard before bidding.

And this should teach YOU a lesson... always give ATer's first crack at your used stuff... ;) You will have much less hassle here than on eBay, I personally only sell New in Box items on eBay so I can avoid scenarios like this one.

all he'd have to do is file that the item was not as advertised....

Been there and done that my friend.....paypal does not warrant against "condition"
and if the seller can show that he shipped a package to the buyer and the seller
received it Paypal is through with the transaction...period.....

I got baited and switched along with several other people and we all got ripped off
by getting far less than what was advertised and paypal didn't do anything about it .
The seller showed them proof of delivery and that was that.

Now what my credit card company did to paypal was a different story :) But
I still have a paypal account and they didn't penalize me as far as I can tell.

Proof of delivery my ass. I sent out a package and the guy changed his mind, sent it back and he got the chargeback from paypal with no problem. Never mind it was on ebay, violated at least 2 ebay rules and 1 paypal rule and violated the terms of the auction. Paypal didn't want my answer, didn't want mediation, didn't want proof of any kind. If you use paypal and the buyer wants to back out (even after you've shipped the item) then more than likely you as the seller will be screwed.

Did the guy receive the item and then ship it back to you or refuse delivery of it?

The thing I don't get is why even use "Chargeback" at all? Why not just pocket the buyer's money, and issue the refund out of your pocket as a completely separate transaction? It shouldn't be that complicated IMO.

Why not take paypal to small claims?
