Is this BS? China to build first FUSION reactor soon. Claims the tech is ready.

France already built one (ITER), the world is already turning into a new playing field, slowly but surely.

France's if I am not mistaken is an experimental type place. This one that they claim China is to build will be one with the 'whole limitless energy thing' that runs continuously.

If they beat us to this, then the whole world playing field is going to be an interesting place over the next few years.

But we'll have our Intelligent Designer designing fusion technology for us, and because he's the supernatural IDiot, it will be better!

On topic, here's to getting Mr. Fusion at our local Wally-world sooner rather than later!

From the article they are still in the exprienmental stage, and will move towards full application. Either way this is awsome, and glad to see this science is moving forward. :)

Nothing like the Angola press to provide news we can use:thumbsdown:

A full superconducting experimental ..

Wan said ITER will also be a full superconducting experimental Tokamak fusion device with an advanced configuration, but much larger than EAST.

If a device is developed ....

If the experiments prove successful.....

Reading the article generates this as a public relations statement rather than a scientific/technilogical paper.

It is the building of a experimental unit; and they expect that it will be build and operational in 3-5 months?
A full superconducting experimental Tokamak fusion device, which aims to generate infinite, clean nuclear-fusion-based energy, will be built in March or April in Hefei, capital city of east China`s Anhui Province.

Experiments with the advanced new device will start in July or August. ]

Also, note that they are working with other countries on this.
The program, still in its initial stages, involves Russia, Japan, the United States, the European Union, China and the Republic of Korea.
When people from those countries start talking about it; then it will be time to take a look at the actual results vs hype.

Fusion doesn't even work yet...it's a waste of time, energy and money right now.

Yeah, its best to stick to oil and steam engines, progress be damned!

I think the fact that governments are investing billions of dollars into a technology despite oil giants efforts to have it quashed have moved it past the hype stage into the get some more R&D and get results stage.

Huh??? How are we to make it work if we don't invest time, energy and money into it? What would you have us invest money into?

Most things do not work until you develop them..... this should be common sense.

The article is hype/PR - not the technology.

Of course it is, but hype is needed to get the backing of it. The point is to get the wheels spinning on investment to get this moving.

We have our own fusion project: Los Alamos National Ignition Laboratory I believe it's called.

Nothing like the Chinese to push forward (with minimal testing) a technology that has the potential to wipe out the world...

Not to mention, this article is pure crap. Fusion has quite a ways to go. Not something to be taken lightly.

lol...

37 million to make unlimited energy?! Any football player could bankroll that.

*vows never to invest in Angola economy*

It's an experimental reactor, which is less advanced and smaller than ITER.

But I like the sentiment. For a decade now, China has been the wisest country in terms of their energy policies. With 40+ fission power plants being built by China, I believe that they are far ahead of US and Europe in terms of fossil fuel independence, and if anyone will develop fusion, at this point it's probably going to be them.

Considering what we know right now, fusion is impossible.

No kidding, something doesn't work right now, so it's a waste of time and money? How does something go from the idea stage to the working stage...the magical science elves?

Yeah, that's why there are 5-6 reactors in the world that do it on a regular basis.

Fusion power plants are an engineering problem, not a theoretical one. And as such, it is clearly only a matter of time and money.

Flat out impossible? or do you mean flat out impossible in an economical manner where you get back more energy than you put in?

What is your science background btw? If it were impossible, why are all these governments and scientists even trying?

I think you need to educate yourself a bit more.
