Is this as good of a deal as it looks?

I've been out of computer's for quite a bit, and was sort of dream shopping on Newegg when I found this:

Is that as good of a deal as it seems to me? I'm thinking about buying it but don't want to do it if it's a mistake. Thanks for any help!!

Looks decent - but I would not count mail in rebare cards. They are such a PITA in general. Free shipping would be a deal closer w/o those cards. But, it is a decent bundle.

It's a good deal if you want to go the AM3/DDR3 route.

But you can make a cheaper deal with DDR2. Like this combo:

X4 955 / mobo Text $270

4GB DDR2 ~$40-50

Samsung 1TB $85

That's around $400 with the better 955 Black Edition processor.

Still it may be a good idea to go with the DDR3 for future use.

Agreed. If you upgrade the mobo again in a year or two, DDR2 won't work...you'll buy all new RAM. Or let's say you want to increase the amount of RAM next year: DDR2 is going to be considerably more expensive than DDR3.

That said, looks pretty decent for the price.

Alight, thanks for the advice everyone

I ended up looking through more combo deals, and came across an Intel deal that had the E6300, a cheap-o ECS motherboard, and 4gb OCZ RAM. I liked the deal except for the motherboard, so I ended up picking out an Asus Open-Box motherboard. Any comments on the new setup?

CPU wise? I don't really need a Quad Core CPU right now, plus the board I got allows me to upgrade to quad core when I get the chance. Plus I saved some cash

get a decent p45 mobo, a decent cooler, and run a 3ghz+ e5200. same chip as the e6300, just a little cheaper. then you're ready for a nice quad when they come down in price.

although if you spend a bit more now and go for maybe an x3 720, you'll be able to hold out a while longer without feeling like you need more cpu power. i7's (and whatever amd offers on that level) should be fairly cheap by then.

I'm thinikin' either the el cheapo e5200 new egg combo - or biting the bullet with an AM3 cpu/mobo package for less than $200.

You could get a nice AM3 Gigabyte 790x (or Asus 790GX combo) with a Phenom 550 for what you were looking at with the "open box" stuff.

And PLEASE don't consider the open box - no I/O plate or cables - pay the extra $20 for a retail box

I got an open box motherboard, but saved a little over $50 I believe so the trade-off should be worth it.

I think you will be happy with that setup. I am not sure what you had before this, but a 6300 is quick enough for most stuff.

I'm upgrading from an Athlon X2 3800+ (1.8ghz). At one point this setup had 2gb DDR and was OC'd to 2.6-2.7ghz. However, I have had a couple capacitors on the motherboard pop on me and a stick of RAM go bad, so I have been down at stock speed and 1gb RAM for quite a while, plus no longer have the liquid cooling I did at the time. That, and the computer isn't always stable :S
