I currently have P4 1.6A @ 2.13GHz, with 512MB DDR333RAM. There is a Sempron 2800+ and motherboard deal at Fry's and was wondering if it will be worth it to change to this setup. Is this even an upgrade? Though Sempron's are "budget" CPU's, how does it fare with the older Pentium 4's like the one I have?

Thank you as always!!!

Sempron 2800+ = Celeron 2800 MHz, I don't think you would notice much of a difference between Sempron 2800+ and P4 @ 2.133.

Why not get a better P4 CPU for your mobo like a 2.8B?

Well, the Sempron 2800+ and MB combo is $99.00 right now....
How much would a sempron 3100 setup cost??

Definately get the new sempron, consider it an AthlonXp 2800+, and an AthlonXP 2800+ would blow your p4 out of the water.

eww dont get the fry's combo. get the hardware online from newegg or zipzoomfly and assemble it yourself, itll be better quality & performance/cost wise... I'm just slightly bitter w/ fry's:disgust: They sold me a prototype mobo (supposedly retail), a 'quality' psu that fried my system, and made me wait several hours in their customer service line. GrRRrrR :|

if you don't want to spend too much money, just buy the maximum cpu the motherboard can handle.
otherwise, get the A64 2800 or Sempron 3100

The Sempron is the new Duron... the Duron has always been better than Celerons, and I don't believe that has changed.

Sempron 2800=Celeron D 335 which is clock at 2800Mhz
Sempron 2800 cannot be compared to Celeron 2.8Ghz which is much slower than the D version

if youre thinking about getting the 3100+ sempron, might as well get the A64 2800+ (much better/noticeable performance compared to your current setup) since it is only $20 more

If you have the extra cash, i'd highly suggest the current Outpost.com deal on their P4 Processor.

This chip is going for $199 shipped at Newegg.com right now. At Oupost, you'll get the same P4 3.0Ghz cpu with a motherboard for $10 less!

P4 3.0GHz 1MB Cache w/ECS Intel 848P Motherboard $189

Best deal i've seen on the web so far :)

Sempron 2800+ is not the same as an Athlon XP 2800+. It only has 256 K cache and runs at 2 Ghz, although at a FSB of 333 MHz. It will be slightly faster than a 2400+.

If you want more bang for your buck, get the fastest CPU that board can handle, which is more than likely a P4 @ 2.8 GHz, which will kill that Sempron.
