Is this an Online UPS?

I'm trying to find a semi affordable online UPS, and I think I may have found a winner except I'm not so sure about the online part.

Staples is selling this APC SmartUPS 750.
http://www.staples.com/office/..._Supplies_10051_SEARCH

I've been doing some research on the model and on staples website it is listed as a sinewave instead of approximated like for some others. However no where on their site does it say whether or not it is actually an online supply. I believe that online is what I need since the power at my house some times dims probably when the sumpump in the basement switches on. If anyone knows anything about UPS' please let me know.

I don't see any reference to that UPS being 'online' or 'double-conversion'. For the price, it seems like it should be, but if you want to know for sure, you may want to call APC and ask.

Here's an excellent APC whitepaper explaining different types of UPS's.

What you've linked to is a "line interactive UPS." Also known as AVR or Auto Voltage Regulation. That UPS will add or subtract voltage as necessary to keep the output at 110v.

Online UPSs are physically very large and very expensive. An online UPS is always powering the attached equipment off the batteries; the AC power just keeps the batteries charged.

The online UPS we have at work can keep our 60-something servers and switches running for about an hour (we have a diesel generator that kicks in instantly though). The UPS takes up roughly a 20x20' room and has probably a hundred batteries (car batteries, basically).

The UPS you linked to is a very nice unit and will run/protect your home gear very well.

You could spend over $300 for that UPS or you could simply buy an APC LE1200 line conditioner for far less.
A line conditioner addresses the issue you have, of brownout, due to the sump pump kicking on.

One caveat...
The APC isn't a "UPS", so it won't keep your rig running during a full blackout.

I buy all my UPSs refurbed.

How about something like this?

Just a heads-up about Sine Wave output units...because you're always charging the batteries to run the equipment, all the units I've seen have a fan running 24/7.

I'm not a noise freak and it doesn't bother me but those with a low noise tolerance might have a problem.

I'd get that in a heartbeat if I was sure it would work, but I'm not sure if it will.
Right now I have my television plugged into one of the non battery sockets on an APC BackUPS. It's not exactly this model, but something older that seems to have been replaced with this one, but this seems to have the same features:

I'm not sure what the difference is between the line conditioner in your post, and what kind of line conditioning happens with my current UPS though. I also wasn't sure if the nonbattery sockets were protected so I bought and later returned a 1500VA Cyberpower UPS (one of the line interactive ones) which didn't seem to fix the problem.

I buy all my UPSs refurbed.

How about something like this?

Thanks for the link. Those prices are much nicer, and I can live with half the warranty at half the cost. Fan noise is a concern for me though I can live with it if it's not too loud.
I've got an antec 900 with all fans set on low so as long as it's roughly same volume that will work. I assume it can be switched off completely though at night. Also have you ordered from that site before? Just want to know your impressions on their service/support.
I also found this one from that site you sent which looks awesome for the price.

Unfortunately it doesn't say anything about whether this one is online either or if it is even a sinewave instead of step approximated. It is supposed to be a SmartUPS made for IBM though.

Finally found this one:

Which seems quite nice since it has a 3 year warranty and it does say it is sinewave. Also not sure about it being online or not. For the price though it seems pretty good since shipping is $30 cheaper than the upsforless site.

I have ordered from there and RefurbUPS.

Both places have had exceptional service and support.

The IBM unit you've linked definately has a sinewave output.

If it's sinewave, it's gonna be online.

That's a nice unit at a good price but it's got 1/2 the power of the IBM unit. Figure what you need power wise and go from there.
