Is this an okay deal, or should I build one on my own?

Hard to tell you if it's a good deal or not without a price on the Dell or the parts you're comparing. Really, with a few minutes spent putting together a similar rig over at Newegg you could figure this out on your own.... 🙂
 
On Dell, that system is about $879.

If you're comfortable building a computer, then you will save a lot of money, and you'll have a much better computer. for $900, I can build a quad core gaming system with a 22" monitor from NewEgg

I would prefer to buy an Intel Based System.

On Dell look for these specials they have for 1 day. They keep advertising them. Sometimes they are throwing in the monitor for free just about. A lot of people are suggesting that you might be better off with 2 Gigs of RAM. However, I figured out that for what you can buy RAM for you are better off getting as little RAM as possible for a lower price and going out and buying your own over the Internet. Some of these sites will charge you $130 for adding the second Gigabyte, and you can probably buy 2 gigs of RAM for that price. Stuff like this is where they add on way too much money. Then if you want a DVD+- r or whatever, they charge like $60 when you can buy retail over the Internet for like $39.00.

So watch out for some of these prices.

I think Dell had a back to school offer with a 500 gig drive, that looked pretty good but it was an Inspiron or something like that. So check every possible avenue when you are looking at retail offers.
 
That's a good deal, even if you have to buy the OS.

I hate Dell, but i don't see how you could build anything (& get a 22" LCD) for that price, even assuming that's a crap case & PSU.

couple of questions. Is that a good case? Really want drives to be able to slip in and out easily. Also, I want it very, very quiet.

Also, what about the CPU. Should I go with that one, or save myself $70 and get the 4600+? (I'm not a gamer, but I will do some encoding of mp3s and video).
