Is this an OK case air flow modification?

Cool, just don't slice off your hand if you go near it. I think maybe if you go to an auto parts store they have some rubber molding that you can use to ring the holes so that they don't look so deadly. 😀

LOL, fortunately, it's the back of the case and I find the fan grill protects it well enough. I mean, I can't get my finger between the fan grill and that part of the case.

Pretty cool idea though. Is that a kind of rubber that comes in a liquid form?

i dont think he means a liquid rubber, i think he means the rubber moulding that usually goes on the edges inside a car, (ie. around the door sills) an auto parts store will know what you mean. comes in a few colours may i suggest black? heh

Should give a fair amount more flow than stock, also quieter fan.

Cheers Mate
Ben

I've seen worse. Get a rounded metal file, and smooth off the edges.

Anyway, once the grill is on it, you won't see the jagged edges. Just make sure all the burrs have been removed; perhaps its less risky to your computer and more risky to your bare feet, since the hole is for an exhaust fan.

I waste a lot of time playing around with the computers and modding my cases. Four hours, nevertheless, is unnecessary expenditure of time, and I bet your hands feel like someone ran over them with a cement truck.

If you invest in a Dremel rotary tool and use it with care and patience, cutting that hole would take an eighth of the time you spent -- even less.

Dremel kits seem to retail at Home Depot for between $60 and $80. There are other very similar rotary tools, with the same cutting wheels, sanders, brushes, etc. I picked up one at Costco by a company named "AllTrade" -- for $25. It seems to do the same job the Dremel does.

Looks OK OP. You could dress it up with the smallest rubber tubing that an autoparts store has, sells for .50cents a foot. Split it with a razor blade and put it in place, just tacking the ends with a tiny dot of super glue. If the hole is right at the edge of the fan this will get in the way on mounting and wouldn't be done.

Be sure and vacuum all the metal dust from inside your case. A trick I learned a long time ago. When grinding or cutting with a power tool on metal and I don't want to breath it or have it contaminate what is being worked on, is to tape the nozzel of the vacuum very close to the area being worked. I have gone as far as taping cardboard on the back side of a panel, then taping the nozzel to the cardboard. The cardboard is shaped first to contain the area of work.

Vacuum don't blow the metel dust out. Blowing can move the conductive dust into areas of the case that would not be good for the life of your componets. I do see the MB was not in the case when you did this work, "that's a good thing." If you didn't, i would have taken out the PSU. Your probably not in trouble but it would be considered good work ethic.

Yeah, I took everything out of the case. It's a good thing I was changing the motherboard. Otherwise, I would have found that kind of annoying to do all that work just to cut a couple of holes.

4hrs? did u research at all? quick search woulda told u that getting a cheap nibbler woulda saved u loads of time... or a dremel. any modding site has this info

What is a nibbler?

BTW, I don't have a drill. LOL, why does everyone think I have a drill?

I had some Canadian Tire money so I only paid $0.24 cents for the cutting blade. Haha!

Every male gets a drill with his man card 😛

Canadian Tire Money??? Is it inflated? Does it bounce? What is it OP?

Galvanized

Its fine sucks that u didnt get a nibbler but yea great job. Man Oh man it took 4 hours!!!! And trust me you didnt even go that far like some people would go 😉

Nice Hole! I recently put a hole in my thermaltake xaser3, I put it in the side panel the little sltits that were there originally were pretty useless. My video card used to run at an average of about 50-52c but now it is running at 46 and gets as low as 42-43 (all idle, load gets to be about 55-59c)

You got good advice from Galvanized Yankee.

This is the extreme nuisance of even performing the most minute metal-computer-case-chassis modification -- like drilling an extra screw hole. You must either remove the electronics including drives and PSU, or isolate them.

For "quick-and-dirty," I've turned plastic grocery bags into plastic sheets and used clear packing tape and the plastic to seal off one part of a computer case from another. If it is a matter of just drilling a hole, you might seal a plastic bag around the back side of the panel and area to be drilled, but you also have to contain the dust and metal trimmings that will pile up or get thrown out from the front side. So even for that, it's a good idea to seal off the entirety of the case and the underside of the hole to be drilled -- then carefully remove burrs with a pair of needle-nose pliers from the underside while wiping away and managing the metal dust and shavings on top before you remove the plastic.

For the job you did, though, I'd strip the computer case down to nothing but sheet metal, and go over it with a fine-toothed comb as recommended by Galvanized before re-installing components.

That rubber-tubing idea is a winner, and I've done that myself.

I've seen better, but on the flipside....I've seen MUCH MUCH worse! LOL

Good job. I would file and sand down the edges so that you don't slice off a finger, but other than that...it's nice. I would have suggested that you go for a bigger hole and a bigger fan, but I guess it's probably too late.

Canadian Tire money is from this chain of hardware/auto parts stores in Canada called Canadian Tire. Whenever you buy something there, they'll give you 'Canadian Tire money' allegedly equal to a certain percentage of your purchase. My experience is that it's some random. This can then be used like regular money at Canadian Tire store.

There's a reason why they do this, but I don't remember it.

Well, so far I haven't received the other fans yet. But, I just wanted to make a remark about the difference I saw. I can't compare to my Duron 1.8 GHz because I didn't have those holes then. But, I noticed when gaming and playing movies, the top of the case stays cool.
Gee, what a relief. 🙂

nibblers sorta like a heavy duty wire cutter..but since its only hand powered its just nibbling away...

but yes, thats the standard minimum case mod esp for sh*t old cases with the worst fan grill designs ever. you know.. some only have a few drill holes as an after thought or something the manufacturer is so cheap.

if the jagged edges bother u ...car door edge protector strips/moulding could probably be bought at canadian tire too?
